The flight search engine Kiwi.com was given as a model and an example of a successful Czech company that was able to establish itself on a global scale. In recent years, however, its operation has been accompanied by constant disputes, both with customers and with airlines, accusing it of breach of contract and unfair business practices. Now the Czech company is even being sued by the world’s largest company, Americas Airlines.
American versus Kiwi
American Airlines recently filed a lawsuit against the Czech company Kiwi.com in a Texas court. The lawsuit alleges that Kiwi continues to sell tickets to the company even though the mutual cooperation was by American Airlines ended three years ago. The airline is demanding that Kiwi stop selling its tickets and will also seek financial compensation. It should be noted that another American company, Southwest Airlines, filed a very similar lawsuit against the Kiwi company in the past years and succeeded in this lawsuit.

American Airlines and a number of other companies do not like the practices of the Czech portal. One of the most fundamental problems is the use of a practice called Hidden City. Airlines often offer tickets from point A to point B with a transfer at point C. However, these can be cheaper than a direct ticket on route AB. Kiwi portal he buys this ticket for his customer who wants to fly from point A to point C without telling him about the second part at all. The airline has no idea that the passenger will not board the second part at all and incurs additional costs associated with checking all the luggage and finding the passenger at the airport, which leads to delays and costs in the amount of thousands or ten thousand dollars.
In the same way, Kiwi often charges a price for the carriage of baggage in excess of the amount required by the airline, or fails to inform its customers sufficiently that baggage is not included in the price of the ticket. Difficulties then arise at airports, from which passengers wrongly blames the airline. Her reputation will suffer as a result.
Not just American Airlines
In addition to the already mentioned Southwest Airlines, as Kiwi is in dispute with a number of other companies, among them we find, for example, British Airways, KLM, Iberia, Finnair, or Ryanair. The lawsuit with American Airlines will probably be the most important for Kiwis, as the American company is also demanding financial compensation.
American Airlines employs 129,000 people and its sales last year reached 1.17 trillion crowns. In their fleet they have almost 1500 aircraft and transports more than 165 million people annually.
