The ambitious works to expand Line 11 begin

The shortest line of the underground network will become one of the most important of the Madrid underground in a few years. At least this is the objective of the expansion works of Line 11 which began this week and will continue for several years. The works should be fully completed in 2027 and the investment that will be made by the Community of Madrid is estimated at 1,600 million euros, although both the date and the amount could increase.

To begin this monumental project, the most important that Metro will undertake in the coming years, it was decided to start by joining the stations of Plaza Elíptica (one of the current sources of the L11) and Conde de Casal (L6). This first phase will cost more than 500 million euros and includes the construction of two new stops: Comillas and Madrid Río. Before reaching Conde de Casal, the new L11 will also pass through Palos de la Frontera (L3) and Atocha Renfe (L1). This first connection should be completed in the last months of 2026.

NEXT SECTIONS
The ‘simple’ and ‘cheapest’ part of the work is the one involving the southern section, which will cost around 75 million euros. The works should begin in the third quarter of 2024 and will consist of joining the sources of Cuatro Vientos with La Fortuna (Leganés). Much more complicated is the central section of the new line, which will cost 650 million euros to connect Conde de Casal with Mar de Cristal (L4 and L8) through the stations of Vinateros (L9), La Elipa (L2), Pueblo Nuevo (L5 and L7) and Arturo Soria (L4). These works will start at the end of 2024 and will end in the second quarter of 2027.

The same term is the one managed for the northern section of the route, which will connect Mar de Cristal with the new interchange located in the Valdebebas neighborhood through two stops, one located in the City of Justice and the other at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas Airport. The estimated budget in this case is around 350 million euros.

New Metro ‘La Diagonal’:

Just as Line 6 is popularly known as “La Circular” among Metro users, the Community of Madrid’s goal is for the new Line 11 to become “La Diagonal”. Its 33.5 kilometers in length make it “the largest metro expansion project in Europe”, according to the regional transport minister, David Pérez.
