After an 86-year break, an exceptional amber collection returned to Kretinga. Countess Antanina Sofija Tiškevičienė donated it to the Kretinga museum!
The collection, which is part of the so-called Palanga treasure, consists of 136 exceptional amber articles. in 1937 The Kretinga Museum lent this collection to the then Vytautas the Great Culture Museum in Kaunas so that it could make copies of the items. However, the people of Kaunas never returned the loaned amber collection, even though they were asked to do so even before the war. Later, the amber items already taken out of Kretinga were simply handed over to the Vytautas Great War Museum and became the property of this museum.
After Lithuania regained its independence and the Kretinga museum moved to the Kretinga estate of Counts Tiškevičius, an initiative was taken to restore historical justice. However, the agreement with the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania and the Vytautas Great War Museum was reached only in 2023.
Thanks to the agreement reached, the set of ancient amber objects donated by Countess Antanina Tiškevičienė returned to the Kretinga Museum under the right of deposit, where, as indicated in 1936. In the thanks of the Kretinga County Municipality and the Kretinga Museum Committee to Countess Antanina Tiškevičienė, “will be especially cherished and always considered the pride of the museum”.
