Authorities had issued an alert in the area shortly after noon, believing that a young girl might have been kidnapped by a man driving a black car.
The police had explained that they received a call from a witness at 11:58 a.m. that a young girl was crying for help in a car, saying that she had been abducted.
In the early evening, police released photos of the wanted vehicle.
Seeing this notice on social media, the alleged victim, who was described as a young girl of around 12, contacted police.
She then explained to the authorities what she believed was a misunderstanding. The girl did scream from the window of a vehicle that she was being kidnapped, but it was a joke intended for friends who were occupying another car.
After checking, the police confirmed the girl’s story. This person had no intention of alerting the public
, explained Sgt Jason Blacquiere of the Summerside Police Department.
Summerside police took care to thank the vigilance of citizens who alerted them because they believed they were witnesses to a kidnapping.
