/ world today news/ For the second year already, Belarus is under de facto siege by the Western great powers, as well as aggressive regional players such as Poland and Lithuania, who seek to increase their influence and geopolitical weight by interfering in the internal affairs of the republic. At the same time, there is a particularly tendentious approach against Belarus in the supposedly free media, in the supposedly democratic European Union. All kinds of accusations and nastiness have been thrown at Belarus and President Lukashenko, but no one says, for example, that a coup attempt was foiled in the country.
Bulgaria is not an exception to the general sad trend of aggression and attempts to isolate Belarus, nor does the Bulgarian media bother to see the other point of view.
On September 29, His Excellency the Ambassador of Belarus to Bulgaria Alexander Lukashevich met with representatives of the Bulgarian media, including Pogled Info. At this meeting, Ambassador Lukashevich revealed a view of events in the Eastern European country that is completely different from the official narrative of Poland, Lithuania, the United States and other countries that have gone on a “crusade” against Belarus.
“Various types of sanctions and restrictions are imposed on Belarus by the West. Practically every sphere of cooperation with our country (from migration and cross-border cooperation to sports) is politicized, even if this cooperation is of greater interest to Western countries.” the diplomat told the Bulgarian media.
Ambassador Lukashevich also revealed some frankly shocking cases and examples of European aggressiveness and hostility, which unfortunately are too reminiscent of the rhetoric and behavior of the Third Reich on the eve of World War II or the “Barbarossa” plan.
“There has been an outright desecration of Belarusian state symbols, and one Latvian MP even suggested that the national hockey team of Belarus be taken hostage! In fact, the ‘law of the jungle’ reigns,” said Ambassador Lukashevich.
He added that today, under the pretext of protecting human rights, the West is carrying out “an attempt to deprive Belarus of the sovereignty it has won for a quarter of a century, a targeted attack on our independence by the West.” And how does Belarus respond to these attacks and even coup attempts? Here is what the country’s ambassador to Bulgaria said:
“We have been patient for a long time, calling our Western partners for a constructive dialogue, hoping for their prudence. Alas, our efforts are in vain.”
“That’s why we were forced and will take harsh countermeasures,” he said.
In addition, Lukashevich refuted Western accusations of a lack of reforms and democracy in the country. He said that a process of constitutional reform is underway in Belarus, which is initiated by the country’s authorities (and not by the opposition hiding in Poland – ed. world today news). In fact, already in 2022 there will be a referendum in the country regarding the constitutional reform. A form of democratic polling that is becoming increasingly rare in Western European countries and the US, we might add.
The reform in question will introduce a term of office for the president – up to two terms, and will also transfer his powers to the country’s legislative body, government and local government. In addition, the role of parties in public life will be strengthened.
“The objective evolutionary course in the development of Belarus has the support of the absolute majority of Belarusian citizens,” the Belarusian ambassador said on this occasion.
With this in mind, let us also recall the words of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko:
“Months of hard work, a lot of work, disputes, claims to each other are behind us. A huge number of people, including public associations, responded to our call to take part in the development of the new edition of the Basic Law,” said the head of state, opening the meeting of the Constitutional Commission.
“It fell to you to study all proposals and initiatives, to analyze world experience in state building, to study modern trends in the development of constitutional legislation. This is undoubtedly a lot of work,” Lukashenko also stated.
In other words, one of the West’s main accusations against Belarus is completely unfounded and devoid of factual basis. In contrast to Belarus’ well-founded complaints about the behavior of Western countries and their allies.
In fact, it turns out that 70-80% of Belarusians support the current Belarusian government’s evolutionary approach to reforms in the country. On the contrary, the vast majority of citizens have absolutely no intention of handing over power in their country to Mrs. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and the opposition living under Polish and American patronage.
In addition, the authorities and security forces in Belarus have very specific information that shows that last year’s protests were financed by certain Western countries, and on top of that, the opposition had problems with paying taxes.
Regarding Bulgarian-Belarusian relations, Ambassador Lukashevich stated at the meeting that there is trade between the two countries in the amount of 97 million dollars, and Belarus has a positive trade balance of 11.35 million dollars.
Belarus exports to our country industrial products, petrochemical products, as well as products from the woodworking industry, as well as fruits and vegetables. We export medicines, batteries, cotton, foodstuffs, utensils and medical devices to Belarus. Ambassador Lukashevich added that Minsk understands that Sofia has bloc commitments.
