The AMB abandons the Barcelona Taxi to its fate
This August, the Associations of the taxi sector of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area reached a sectoral pact and therefore self-regulating.
In view of the entry in the month of September, it is necessary to re-regulate the fleet of taxis that go out every day, since the sector calculates a loss of 80% of the turnover, due to the extraordinary situation by the coronavirus.
The lack of demand for the taxi due to restrictions, lack of tourists, closing of shops and the rise in teleworking, has led to a crisis in the sector like never before.
The Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET), dependent on the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) and the Generalitat de Catalunya, refused to implement a regulation in accordance with the crisis situation, so taxi drivers were forced to self-regulate, leaving one side to the administration.
What is expected for the month of September
Taxi drivers in the Metopolitan area of Barcelona have no forecast that the current situation will improve, so they believe that it is reckless to return to normality to keep 100% of the taxi fleet on the street.
Taxi drivers already urged the municipalities of this August to the Metropolitan Taxi Institute, as the head of the management of the taxi service in the AMB, to promote the necessary regulations for regulation.
No agreement has been reached
In a statement signed today by the associations of the sector, to which Todo Taxi has had access, they report that a sector agreement like last month has not been reached.
They also indicate in their statement that regulation is solely and exclusively
to the IMET, as the public body responsible for the management and administration of the taxi service in the AMB and which cannot indefinitely start from a sectoral agreement, without legal guarantees.
“We have not received any response from IMET to our request filed on August 20, in which we urged them to promote an orderly regulation that would legally protect us in September.”
The IMET has called the associations to a meeting on September 1, in which the taxi drivers trust that a solution will be reached regarding the reduction of the fleet, as well as the commitments made by the AMB to offer aid to the sector.
In the statement they also warn the administration in the case of inaction:
“In the event that the different administrations persist in their unacceptable abandonment of functions, the associations will adopt all the measures that are necessary in defense of the sector, such as different types of mobilizations and acts of pressure.”
