The Amazing Mercedes-Benz W123 with Over 7 Million Kilometers: A True Test of Reliability

“One hundred and twenty-third” Mercedes-Benz was considered one of the most reliable in the history of this German brand, for which the mark of more than 1 million kilometers was unimportant. But this particular example of the W123, found in Gran Canaria, proves that this figure is not even close to the limit for the German 4-door.

Photos of the Mercedes-Benz W123, which has traveled more than 7 million kilometers, have appeared on the Internet. The machine has been in operation in Maspalomas since August 1988. And for 35 years it has been used as a taxi.

The car was purchased in 1986, but the sedan was registered only two years later. The Mercedes-Benz 240D Limousine is an extended version of the 123 with a cabin that can carry up to seven passengers.

The car is equipped with a 2.4-liter diesel engine producing 71 horsepower, assisted by a 5-speed manual gearbox.

In 2008, the owner of this Mercedes, who owned his own taxi fleet, died. At this point, the car had already covered 3.7 million kilometers.

But instead of sending the car to its well-deserved rest (like a junkyard), the son of the owner of this 240D Limousine carried out a complete restoration and added a number of improvements, including ventilated brake discs from the W126, a reinforced rear axle and a Recaro driver’s seat.

Since then, the car often works as a taxi 24 hours a day, accumulating about 700 kilometers per day, which is equivalent to almost 5 thousand km per week. In order to maintain it in good technical condition, the sedan undergoes a weekly engine oil change.

Of course, the engine itself in this Mercedes is not original. It could not withstand such a high escape and was replaced with a new one, which now undergoes a full overhaul every million kilometers traveled.
