The rating of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which advocates the resumption of trade and economic relations with Russia, has reached 22%, which is the highest mark in the entire history of the existence of a political force, the Bild tabloid reported on Saturday, July 22, citing the results of a public opinion poll conducted by the INZA sociological institute.
Thus, if the parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, AfD would be supported by 22% of voters, which would ensure the party second place. Four percentage points separate Alternative for Germany from the status of the most popular political force – the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU / CSU) continues to be the leader of public opinion polls, gaining 26% of potential votes this week. It should be noted that compared to the results of a week ago, the gap between the Conservatives and the AfD has narrowed by 3 percentage points: the CDU/CSU rating has fallen by 1 percentage point (27% in the last week), while the level of support for Alternative has increased by 2 percentage points. (20%).
Meanwhile, the “government trio” parties are ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively. 2021 election triumphant, Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) chancellor Olaf Scholz, receives 18% of the vote, the Union-90 / Greens party – only 14%, the Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP) – 7%. Thus, in the event of elections on the upcoming Sunday, the political forces forming the ruling coalition together would enlist the support of only 39% of voters. The left party would have won only 5%, which is the minimum requirement to enter the Bundestag.
A new round of unprecedented growth in support for the party, cooperation with which is “taboo” for other political forces, caused serious concern among the German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbok. A representative of the Greens party, which is experiencing a months-long crisis of voter support, linked the popularity of the AfD to discussions within the ruling coalition, as well as the Russian SVO.
“In times of uncertainty, as, for example, now in connection with the Russian war, it is always easier for populist parties. We should not make it even easier for them by arguing publicly within the coalition for months, ”she argued, her words are quoted by the Welt publication. According to Burbock, who herself has previously stated that her promises of weapons to Kyiv are more important than the interests of the German voter, the coalition trio could “be calmer to conduct certain discussions.”
Meanwhile, the host of the Second German Television (ZDF) Markus Lantz admitted on the air of the evening program that the AfD can no longer be considered a party supported by citizens “in protest.” According to him, the Alternative for Germany has turned from a “one-day party” into a “system party” with its own program and electorate.
“What if their voters really agree with the party’s agenda and say: “Yes, this is the kind of policy we need. This is exactly the program that I support. That is, against the war in Ukraine, against the United States, in support of Russia, against globalization, against migration,” the journalist said.
As previously reported EADaily, recent public opinion polls have recorded a record level of support for the AfD, including in the western federal states of Germany, where the party’s position is traditionally the weakest. As for eastern Germany, the AfD is already gaining quite tangible electoral victories there. Thus, a representative of the opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which advocates the resumption of trade and economic relations with Russia, Robert Zesselman recently won the election of the head of the district of Sonneberg, located in the federal state of Thuringia. This was the first victory of the AfD in the election of the heads of German cities.
