The PEUGEOT 208 was the best-selling new car in Europe last year. Now it has been updated and has become even more attractive thanks to a 100% electric version with a range of 400 km, a completely different design, advanced technologies and new power units.
Almost a million cars in three years
The PEUGEOT 208 was launched at the end of 2019, and in just over three years, almost a million units have been produced worldwide. In 2021 and 2022, this was the best-selling new car in Europe, taking all segments together. The key to this success is largely the E-208, which became Europe’s best-selling B-segment electric car in 2022.
The new 208 will be available in three versions – ALLURE, ACTIVE, GT – and with five powertrains, including the new 115 kW/156 hp electric motor that provides a range of 400 km (WLTP combined cycle figure still to be confirmed), and the new HYBRID 100 and HYBRID 136 for engines.
“Working with such an important and successful model as the 208 is always a big test. Our goal was to take its design and performance to a higher level, but at the same time keep the soul of the model, to ensure it continues to be at the top of the European B-segment sales figures. The new 208 surpasses its predecessor in every way: it’s even more cat-like, it’s even more fun to drive, and it’s even more technological. All in all, the 208 is even more irresistible! And even more electrified, with a new electric motor with a range of 400 km, as well as new HYBRID 100 and HYBRID 136 engines,” says PEUGEOT Product Director Jérôme Micheron.
A new look
All versions of the new 208 have a completely transformed front end with the brand’s new logo in the center. Combined with the grille and body, which are no longer separate elements, but form a unified whole, the car acquires a more robust, impressive and modern visual image and emphasizes the 208’s transition into a new era of PEUGEOT design.
The front of the E-208 is decorated with the newly designed PEUGEOT light patterns, which were first introduced on the 9X8 Hypercar racing car, later on the new 508 and 508 SW, and most recently also on the 2008 model. The most distinctive feature of the front LED lights are three long, vertical ‘nail scratches’ embedded in the bumper’s gloss black inserts.
The rear lights have also been redesigned with three red claws arranged side by side.
The interior of the 208 is made more attractive by unprecedented combinations of materials and colors, such as seats with black Alcantara trim and Adamite Green stitching.
The external dimensions of the new PEUGEOT E-208 are as compact as before – the car is 4.055 m long, 1.745 m wide (excluding mirrors) and 1.43 m high. The luggage compartment has also remained the same size – its volume is 309 liters.
Even more technology in the new i-Cockpit
The first generation 208 was the first PEUGEOT with the iconic i-Cockpit front panel. Now it’s even more technological, connected, ergonomic and customizable. The instrument panel is perfectly positioned at the driver’s eye level and in ALLURE and GT versions – fully digital. The generous 10-inch panel has a new design, and the GT version already has a screen with 3D function as standard equipment.
The 208 version, equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, now has a newly designed shifter with better ergonomics. But the versions with automatic transmission retain the elegant, practical and discreet selector that was introduced in the spring of 2022.
E-208 with 400 km mileage
The new E-208 has a new 115 kW/156 hp electric motor, which in combination with a 51 kWh battery ensures a driving distance of 400 km. The battery can be charged from 20 to 80% in less than 25 minutes when using the fast station (100 kW).
The 208 is available with two new 48V hybrid powertrains, which include the latest generation PureTech 100hp and 136hp petrol engines and an electrified dual-clutch 6-speed e-DCS6 gearbox with an integrated electric motor.
Thanks to a battery that charges while driving, this technology provides additional torque at low revs and up to 15% less fuel consumption. When driving around town, the HYBRID 100 and HYBRID 136 can operate in pure electric zero-emission mode more than half the time.
The latest generation entertainment and information system
The 208 now comes with the PEUGEOT i-Connect system as standard, while the i-Connect Advanced system is available as an option for all versions. Both use a central touchscreen that’s easy to customize, works in multi-window mode, and is loaded with widgets and shortcuts. Basically, it functions as intuitively and responsively as a smartphone.
The i-Connect system offers full connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while i-Connect Advanced also includes high-performance TomTom navigation. For easier reading, the map is displayed on the entire 10-inch screen. The car receives software updates wirelessly using mobile data.
A 15W smartphone wireless charger (previously 5W) is available for ALLURE equipment. The charger panel is located behind the center console flap and means you can safely use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and the battery will be kept full or quickly charge an empty battery.
The front and rear parking cameras transmit a high-resolution image. The new front camera is available as an optional extra and in combination with blind spot monitoring provides a 360° view of the immediate surroundings. A very useful function when parking the car in a narrow parking space.
Finally, the new PEUGEOT 208 is offered with a comprehensive package of driver assistance systems. It includes, for example, adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function and variable minimum distance to the car in front. The package also includes automatic emergency braking, which warns of a possible collision and is able to recognize pedestrians and cyclists near the road in the speed range from 7 to 140 km/h, both during the day and at night. The car is equipped with a system that warns about leaving the lane and corrects the trajectory itself. It also has a system that monitors the driver’s vigilance – it analyzes micro-movements of the steering wheel and records the relaxation of attention when the car is driving faster than 65 km/h for a long time. But this is only part of the assistance systems – the new PEUGEOT 208 will take care of you in many other ways.
The new PEUGEOT 208 will arrive at brand dealers in Latvia in November.
