The Alfa Romeo Spider is emerging. She knows what she would look like, but she still doesn’t have a place

Spider is one of the most famous models in the history of Alfa Romeo. Now his return is looming, in electric form.

Alfa Romeo has always been a sports-tuned carmaker, so from the logic of the matter it also belongs to a pure sports car. After last year’s end of the 4C model, however, Alfa’s offer includes only a sporty version of the original Quadrifoglio models, or a purely sharp Giulia GTA sedan. Now, however, the return of an orthodox sports car is looming, although of course at Alfa we have to take it with a grain of salt. Given the recent history …

As part of the merger of the PSA Group and the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group, Jean-Philippe Imparato, the current head of Peugeot and, above all, a great sports car lover, took the lead. Immediately after his arrival, he made it clear that he would like to see the former GTV in Alfa’s offer again. After a few months, however, the return of another sports model from Alfa’s history is beginning to take shape.

Imparato confirmed that he had Alfa Romeo Spider’s modern vision developed. It was a legendary model, a convertible, which lasted in several series for 27 long years, was produced between 1966 and 1993. Then it replaced it Spider derived from the GTV coupefollowed by Spider sharing technique with model Brera. It ceased production in 2010.

“I have a car, I showed it to dealers. But I don’t dare show it to Carlos Tavares (CEO of Stellantis) until I’m absolutely sure of the goal of market share,” says Imparato, indicating that his main task lies elsewhere. Before Alfa can build sports cars again, it must have a strong position and sell more cars than today.

At the same time, Alfa’s boss reckons that if the open model were actually implemented, it would be electrically powered. This would be related to the future plans of the brand, which from 2027 intends to present exclusively electric models in Europe. In addition, with a spider, an electric drive would actually make sense – such a “toy” does not matter low range, a quiet electric drive can bring interesting driving experiences. And thanks to the batteries in the floor, even an open body could be stiff enough.
