Title: New Wave of COVID-19 Infections Hits Mainland China, Raises Concerns Over Healthcare System
Date: June 21, 2023
In a recent interview conducted by Epoch Times reporter Hong Ning, it has been revealed that mainland China is experiencing a resurgence of the new crown epidemic, with a significant increase in the number of infected individuals. Some patients have described the virus as a “terrible, invisible killer.”
This marks the first wave of large-scale infections since the sudden release of the lockdown by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at the end of last year, which resulted in a high number of fatalities. The number of people testing positive for the first infection began to rise in April, and since May, there has been a significant increase in cases, including the emergence of the “two yang” variant. Disturbingly, some elderly individuals with underlying health conditions have succumbed to white lung disease after contracting the virus.
Dr. Yu Li, a pseudonym for a doctor in Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province, reported to The Epoch Times on June 16 that there has been a surge in hospitalizations and deaths among infected individuals in Eryang. Wang Yi, another pseudonym from Nantong, Jiangsu Province, shared her severe symptoms and prolonged recovery period of over 20 days, expressing her confusion about how she contracted the virus.
Wang Yi recounted her experience to The Epoch Times on June 17, stating that she started experiencing headaches, body pains, and bone pains on May 25. She tested positive on May 26 and subsequently developed fever, sweating, insomnia, diarrhea, dizziness, and shortness of breath by the 18th day.
Ms. Liao from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, who tested positive on June 12, described her severe symptoms, including fever, dizziness, nausea, and the subsequent development of pneumonia. She emphasized the terrifying nature of the virus, referring to it as an invisible killer with potential long-term consequences even after recovery.
Residents in Fuzhou, a southern city in China, have reported a serious second wave of infections in the past month. A resident named A Liang informed The Epoch Times that although the symptoms were milder compared to the first wave, the contagion remained strong, with many people in his vicinity being infected.
Even healthcare professionals have not been spared from the virus. Physician Bai from Beijing Anzhen Hospital shared on social media that he contracted the virus, along with the department director, Shou Yang, both infected by a patient.
Elderly individuals with underlying health conditions have been particularly affected by this wave of the epidemic, resulting in deaths from white lung disease. Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine highlighted the increased number of patients visiting fever clinics across the country, with those with low immunity, advanced age, or serious underlying diseases being more susceptible to pneumonia.
Tragically, a resident of Pudong, Shanghai, revealed that his father recently succumbed to white lung disease after contracting the new crown virus. Netizen Tiantian also shared a similar experience of losing her father after being infected with the virus.
The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Communist Party of China released a report on June 11, stating that 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and Xinjiang reported 2,777 new severe cases and 164 deaths. These cases were all linked to secret Keron mutant strains, with XBB.1.9, XBB.1.16, and XBB.1.5 being the most prevalent subclades.
Due to the consistent concealment of the epidemic by the CCP authorities, the exact number of people infected in this new wave remains unclear.
Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has predicted a potential second peak of the epidemic at the end of June, with an alarming estimate of up to 65 million people being infected every week. This would be the first major infection period on the mainland since the full lifting of the lockdown in December last year. Concerns are mounting over the strain this surge in infections may place on China’s healthcare system.
