/ world today news/ MEPs from the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the EP at their meeting this week voted an opinion on a report on a new visionary and innovative future strategy for trade and investments.
The adopted amendment calls on the Commission to create rules ensuring a high level of protection for all geographical indications in third-party markets. BSP MEP Momchil Nekov explains that the purpose of his proposal is for all current and future Bulgarian products with geographical indications to be protected in international agreements. At the moment, there are only two of them – the Bulgarian rose and the Gorno-Oryakhov sujuk.
The European schemes for quality food and products are a mechanism to support domestic production. They give visibility and recognition to products, guaranteeing an authentic taste that consumers value and seek. At the moment, there are about 1,300 products registered in the European scheme with geographical indications, and more than 100 others are currently undergoing verification and approval procedures.
“The scheme is an opportunity to create and maintain a livelihood in settlements and regions outside the economic centers. This is an opportunity to strengthen local and native production, as well as to develop the local economy, because local labor and raw materials are involved,” adds Nekov.
Later this month, the Bulgarian MEP is organizing a conference at which products identified as potential candidates for protection under the European schemes will be presented. The event will take place on June 24 at 10 a.m. at the “House of Europe” in the city of Sofia at 124 Georgi S. Rakovski Street.
