The African Union launches a continental campaign against Covid-19 – Agence Afrique

A continental campaign was launched this Thursday, under the sign: “Africa against Covid-19: campaign to save lives, economies and livelihoods”, by the Commission of the African Union (AU) in view to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic at various levels in the continent, where a relaxation of protective measures is underway.

“It is essential to prepare Africa for the next phase of the Covid-19 pandemic,” suggested engasong, director of the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), during a virtual press briefing during which the campaign was launched.

This campaign to preserve lives and economies in Africa is initiated by the Africa CDC in collaboration with the African Union Commission for Social Affairs and the Commission for Infrastructure and Energy.

Nkengasong described as a “sign of hope” the decrease in the number of new cases of Covid-19 recorded last week in the continent, emphasizing nevertheless, on the need to avoid “the fatigue of prevention” and rather to strengthen the precautionary measures recommended by the authorities of the various countries.

“We approach the trend with cautious optimism […] We still do not know the true extent of exposure to the virus on the continent, ”he warned.

The organizers of the anti-covid-19 campaign also aim to test in the short term, some 10 million people across the continent said the director of CDC Africa, specifying that since June 4, more than 10.2 million tests had been carried out to date, exceeding the initial target.

As of Thursday, August 20, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 on the African continent stood at 1,147,369 including 870,568 healings and 26,618 deaths, according to Nkengasong.
