The coefficient of air resistance of most vehicles gives the values ​​that cars show in the so-called air tunnel. The lower the number, the lower the air resistance and the more aerodynamic the car. This mainly affects fuel consumption and maximum speed, and especially because of consumption, every carmaker today strives to keep these numbers as low as possible for new models.

The recently introduced fourth generation hatchback from Mladá Boleslav, the Škoda Fabia, reports success in this field. Its coefficient of air resistance is 0.28, which is a significant decrease compared to 0.32, which had the previous generation.

In addition, according to the carmaker, such a number means that the Fabia is the most aerodynamic model in its class. For comparison, the absolute lowest coefficient of air resistance from production cars is Tesla Model S with a value of 0.208, for small series cars the best value is 0.19, which is shared by experimental cars GM EV1 and Volkswagen XL1.

“Although the new fabia is longer than its predecessor and its front part has increased by about 3%, we have reduced the value of the air resistance coefficient by almost 10%. This alone reduces the CO2 emissions of the WLTP cycle by almost 3 g / km. To achieve this, we performed more than 3,000 aerodynamic tests, about 80% of which were performed virtually using CFD simulations, “he said. Vít Hubáček, who was in charge of Fabia aerodynamics during the development.

According to Škoda, several departments, from designers to aeroacoustics experts and developers with virtual reality, took part in the result. The Mladá Boleslav carmaker states that it has significantly strengthened its personnel and professional capacities in this sector, which has proved to be a key step. Previously, there were only three aerodynamics experts in the entire Škoda. The same number of people now worked only on the fabia.

An important element in this regard are, among others, the new blinds in the radiator grille, which have the task of actively reducing consumption. It is a pity that at a speed of 120 km / h it is 0.2 l / 100 km less on the motorway. At maximum cooling, the blades open and air flows into the engine, but at higher speeds they partially close.

It is also important where the air flows under the car. While previously it was led by only 3 chassis covers, the new Fabia has 12 of them. Aerodynamics and air swirling are also helped by a long rear spoiler. In addition, as much as 25% of the air resistance of vehicles is made up of wheels. The Fabia therefore has a new one with aerodynamic covers.
