The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) is increasing its activity in Lalín. It closed 2023 with 162 interventions for cancer patients and their environment, which represents a significant increase compared to the previous year. So far in 2024, the number of interventions stands at 59, both from the Social Work and Psychological Care departments.
Of the 162 interventions last year, 138 were psychological care, either in person at the association’s premises in the town, or at home or online. The remaining 24 correspond to services from the Social Work department that dealt with requests for financial aid, home loans of orthopaedic material, such as articulated beds, anti-bedsore mattresses, wheelchairs, bathing material, wigs…, as well as requests for information and guidance on resources and benefits.
Public attention
Thanks to the collaboration of the Lalín Council, the AECC in Lalín has a Public Service Point in the town. The space, provided free of charge by the council, is located at number 42 of Avenida Xosé Cuíña, in the facilities of the Lalín Arena. Psychologists and social workers from the association travel to the town to attend to the needs of patients and their surroundings who, due to their circumstances, cannot travel.
The organisation’s volunteers in Lalín carry out prevention campaigns to inform the population about colon cancer, skin cancer and sun protection, breast cancer, etc. It is worth mentioning that the Spanish Association Against Cancer is the only organisation in Europe that has free telephone assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year for anyone who needs help; the telephone number is 900 100 036.
Pilates workshop
In addition to bringing care to the residents of Lalín, the AECC has been offering a pilates workshop for cancer patients and their families for a year. 70 years of experience
The Spanish Association Against Cancer has been the reference entity in the fight against cancer for 70 years. It dedicates its efforts to showing the reality of cancer in Spain, detecting areas for improvement and launching a process of social transformation that allows them to be corrected in order to obtain a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to cancer. Its DNA is to be at the side of people, which is why its work is also oriented to helping them prevent cancer; to be with them and their families throughout the process of the disease, if they are diagnosed; and to improve their future by promoting oncological research. In this sense, through its Scientific Foundation, the association brings together the social demand for cancer research, financing quality oncological scientific research programs through public competition. Today, it is the social and private entity that allocates the most funds to cancer research: 104 million euros in 565 projects, in which more than 1,000 researchers participate.
