The Adam Project Director Says Ryan Reynolds Movie Doesn’t Need a Sequel

The Adam Project director Shawn Levy says he doesn’t think the film needs a sequel. The film, which premieres on Netflix on March 11, reunites Levy with her free boy star Ryan Reynolds. The cast also includes Walker Scobell, Catherine Keener, Jennifer Garner and, should Deadpool officially make it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Reynolds’ future MCU co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldaña.

The Adam Project follows a time traveler from the future (Reynolds) who crash-lands in 2022. He must team up with his 12-year-old self (Scobell) to battle a horde of advanced robots and save the future. Meanwhile, he too must mend his relationship with his estranged father (Ruffalo), uniting the family through time. Early reviews of the film are favorable, earning it a 71% “new” critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing. The public, meanwhile, got a score of 92%.

IndieWire posted an interview with Shawn Levy about the film. Considering that many of his films have spawned sequels and franchises (including free boy, Night in the museum, The Pink Pantherit is included big fat Liar), was asked if he feels pressured to take sequels into account when developing new projects. He said it was certainly a consideration when developing The Adam Projectbut “I want to leave that as it is.He admits that he could come up with ideas for a sequel if he was pressed to do so, but “this is exactly what we set out to do, and I think we’ll leave it here.Read his full quote below:

“On The Adam Project, there was so much love for it in the early cuts on Netflix, and the question of a sequel came up. And Ryan and I talked about it and we were both like, ‘You know what? This thing is exactly what we set out to do, and I think we’re going to leave this here. There was never any pressure to leave it more open-ended, but I guess, with a gun to my head, I could come up with ideas for a sequel. The Adam Project. I’m not currently leaning towards those, because this movie resolves itself with exactly the feeling I wanted, which is that combination of warmth and tears, but also hope. I want to leave that as it is.”

Shawn Levy’s approach to the film seems to go against the philosophy that has taken over the industry in recent years. Especially with streaming services like Netflix, blockbuster projects have often been developed with an eye to generating future innings, even with teen rom-coms like To all the boys I’ve loved before O the kissing booth. This stance is especially surprising considering that Netflix has already given the green light. From aftermath of red noticeanother recent Ryan Reynolds project in which he co-starred with The Rock and Gal Gadot.

And The Adam Project is successful, it’s more than likely that Netflix will still develop a sequel one way or another. However, it doesn’t seem like Levy is necessarily on board for that to happen. Considering that he is already dividing his time between big projects like free boy 2the miniseries All the light we can’t seeand a new version of star manhe probably couldn’t even find the time in his schedule to consider it anyway.
