The actor and founder of the Teatro Aleph Óscar “Cuervo” Castro dies

At the age of 74, the Chilean actor died in France Oscar “Cuervo” Castro, an artist recognized for his film credits and for founding the Aleph Theater in the late 1960s.

Castro accumulated jobs in films such as “Burning patience” by Antonio Skarmeta, “To do” by Raúl Ruiz and “Nowhere” by Luis Sepúlveda, among other titles produced in France.

In theater, the actor was part of avant-garde works such as “You Serve Molotov Cocktail” and “Viva in mundo de Fanta Cia” during the early days of the Aleph company. In 1974 and with the established military dictatorship, “Cuervo” Castro wrote and premiered the play “And at the beginning there was life”, which according to Chilean Memory site “He approached the historical moment that Chile was living through metaphors and strong symbolism.”

After a month of exhibition, the play was closed and the actor was detained and tortured by agents of the State.

“A sad day for the theater with the departure of Óscar Castro. Interpreter, director and manager who dedicated his life to theater in Chile and abroad, with an unwavering commitment. A hug to his family, friends and the different generations he guided” the Minister of Cultures, Consuelo Valdés, lamented on Twitter.
