FAJAR.CO.ID, MAKASSAR — In order to accelerate the construction of Fish Houses or better known as FADs/Kelongs in South Sulawesi, Acting Governor Bahtiar Baharuddin, instructed the Head of the South Sulawesi Maritime and Fisheries Service (DKP), Muh Ilyas, to immediately prepare a proposal for the construction of FADs, addressed to the central government. Precisely at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP).
“I have directed the Head of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to make a proposal requesting the construction of fish houses in the Makassar Strait (West Coast of South Sulawesi) and in Bone Bay (East Coast of South Sulawesi),” said Bahtiar, Sunday, October 1 2023.
Bahtiar targets 100,000 FADs. It is known that FADs are fish houses that can be built quickly, with the aim of ensuring an abundance of sea fish.
“The ideal fish house, a kind of permanent fish house, is sea coral and mangrove trees. The problem is, growing coral takes a long time and so do mangroves,” he explained.
“Now, South Sulawesi fishermen are forced to fish in the deep sea, far from the coast. Meanwhile, the number of large fishing vessels is limited so they require very large capital,” continued Bahtiar.
The breakthrough as a form of solution for fishermen who do not have capital, as well as to overcome poverty quickly, said Bahtiar, is to build as many FADs as possible. The sea area belongs to the state, so all people have the right to enjoy the sea products.
“We believe that artificial fish houses, such as FADs, are a quick solution to alleviating poverty for fishermen in Indonesia,” concluded Bahtiar. (selfie/dawn)
