The accountant and the crisis: «I work, but nobody pays. And for the state we are privileged »

Matteo De Lise has recently been elected president of young Italian accountants. Neapolitan, 30 years old, Matteo one of those professionals who are experiencing the epochal change of a category. The average annual income of young professionals today is around 15 thousand euros gross per year – he recalls – anything but caste, anything but privileged. We have studied a lifetime, passed state exams and market selections and now this crisis comes to put everything at risk.

The lockdown and the dry professionals

The lockdown has also upset the world of professionals, many of whom cannot simply work remotely. Many colleagues – continues De Lise – are still in full swing: bankruptcy trustees, judicial administrators have yet to move from their studies: in bankruptcy sentences inventories and interrogations are still ongoing in person. We work more than before, with greater risks but we do not receive payments. Within the next month we will have liquidity problems because the companies that have closed do not pay.

The 600 euro bonus (under 35 thousand euro)

In such situations, professionals had also been excluded from the first self-help bonus. Yes, we had been excluded – recalls the president of the young accountants – the only ones to be excluded from all the self-employed workers always on the basis of the prejudice that sees us as privileged rich people. But even after that, when we were included, we were the only ones subjected to an income distinction. The 600 euro bonus granted to workers who received, in the 2018 tax year, a total income of no more than 35 thousand euros. The compensation provided also for those who have received a total income of between 35 thousand and 50 thousand euros provided that they can demonstrate a loss of income in 2020 of at least 33% due to the coronavirus.

The limits of aid to professionals

Only professionals have asked to demonstrate a loss which, among other things, cannot be demonstrated. For the simple reason that the effects of coronavirus will be felt in the second trimester. Anyone who is a freelancer knows the long payment times: what we cashed from January to March what we worked at the end of 2019. Now income and liquidity problems begin. We await a state that knows how to listen to our difficulties in addition to asking us to meet our obligations.
