The Absurdity of Obtaining Proof of Life: A BILD Reader’s Story

“An application for the issuance of an application form. “To confirm the invalidity of the carbon copy,” chansonnier Reinhard Mey sang back in 1977. But nothing seems to have changed much to this day!

BILD reader Günter Brandenburger (69) from Celle (Lower Saxony) could also sing a song about it. The sales representative should now face the Signal Iduna, from which he receives 287 euros per month from a small If you receive life insurance, you must provide a so-called proof of life.

However, neither a call, fax nor email is enough, says Brandenburger: “No, the proof should be provided by a third party.”

BILD reader Günter: “That’s absurd!”

But the pensioner, who also has health insurance with Signal Iduna, didn’t see that. Brandenburger: “Man, people, I’m still alive! You are withdrawing money from my health insurance account and at the same time refusing to pay me my premium. That’s absurd!”

Signal Iduna counters this: “In the Signal Iduna Group we have a separation of divisions. For data protection reasons, we are not permitted to obtain information about our life insurance customers from other divisions of the group. In addition, the debit of a contribution is not proof that an insured person (account holder) is still alive.”

Proof is not required for every pension payment, but only every two years, continued press spokeswoman Ann-Kathrin Wacker. This is common practice, including at competitors.

In fact, anyone can insurance carrier and every government agency can demand a life certificate and determine for itself which agencies are allowed to issue it. Abroad these are often the German consulates general.

Pension insurance also requires proof of life

The Pension Service even requires such proof of life every year from those entitled to pensions who live in countries with which there is NO procedure for comparing death dates. This must be filled out and confirmed by an official body and the original sent to Germany by post.

Otherwise, pension payments will be stopped.

Pensioners in Germany do not have to submit a certificate of life, as in the event of death a corresponding report is made by the registration offices to the pension insurance providers.

In Günter’s case, Signal Iduna was accommodating. Spokeswoman Ann-Kathrin Wacker: “We evaluate the contact ‘BILD-fights-for-you!’ editorial team to the policyholder as an exception as proof of life and remove the payment stop. But in two years we will have to insist on proof of life from a third party.”
