The Danish royal palace looks back on a “festive evening”, as they shared on social media. On Sunday evening, Prince Christian’s 18th birthday was festively celebrated with a gala at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. “A festive evening ended with His Royal Highness Prince Christian taking the stage and thanking all guests,” the Danish court said in a series of photos from the party.
The Spanish Crown Princess is nowhere to be seen in the images. The eldest daughter of King Felipe (55) and Queen Letizia (51) was not present, and that is not the first time. The princess was also absent last year during the birthday party of Norwegian Princess Ingrid Alexandra, and it later came to light that Leonor is not part of the WhatsApp group in which the young royals keep in touch with each other.
“Big distance”
The absence of the Spanish princess has of course not gone unnoticed in the Spanish media. “This once again marks the great distance between the princess and her counterparts, for all of whom she remains ‘the great unknown’,” writes ‘Lecturas’, a popular Spanish magazine. The royal family has not provided an explanation in the Spanish press as to why the princess was absent during the celebrations, but according to well-known Spanish royal expert Pilar Eyre, Leonor’s mother has been preventing her from joining her royal peers for much longer.
“Letizia does not want Leonor to be present,” the expert said about this earlier. “Because it would not do for a monarchy that pretends to be simple and democratic to pose with the other heirs to the throne in long dresses and crowns in an ostentatious royal setting. Eliminating all unnecessary luxury has been one of Letizia’s goals. With every step she has taken, she is only further distancing herself from that bombastic government model.”
In particular, the image created of the royals would discourage Queen Letizia from allowing her daughter to attend royal events. Moreover, the question remains whether Leonor can throw a party for her birthday. On October 31, Felipe and Letizia’s daughter will come of age, but according to the Spanish press it will be a very modest event. “Celebrating her birthday will be far from the outward show that Prince Christian has shown. No tiaras or prom dresses.”
