The efforts of parents and children in the Dominican Republic to achieve a position of power in the National Congress or in the presidency of the country, have dozens of names and surnames. One of them is Abinader with José Rafael and Luis Rodolfo, Both, father and son, through presidential candidacies have wanted and want to direct the destinies of the Dominican Republic.

Attempts to José Rafael Abinader from being president they go back to three official candidacies: 1982, 1990 and 1996 and in none could he achieve his objective.

José Rafael Abinader Wassaf was born in Tamboril, in the province of Santiago in 1929, he was a writer, a doctor of law, an expert in finance and public administration, he was minister of finance (today the Ministry of Finance), vice-rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, general controller of the Republic, director general of Income Tax , director of the National Budget Office and senator for the province of Santiago for the Dominican Revolutionary Party from 1998 to 2002.

In 1966 he founded the Dominican O&M University. Along with his contributions to education, he wrote works such as Economic and Social Ideas; Comments about savings; Sketch of an economic study; Administrative corruption in Latin America; Society under scrutiny; Ancient poems; The balloon; World Currency; Historical Truths ”among other publications.

His political life was carried out both in the Dominican Revolutionary Party and in the Dominican Social Alliance, of which he was a presidential candidate twice, in 1982 and 1996. He also participated in the Modern Revolutionary Party, the legal continuation of the ASD, of which he was appointed president for life.

Despite failing to achieve his goal of reaching the presidency of the Republic in 1982, achieving only 9,208 votes and becoming President Salvador Jorge Blanco in the Dominican Revolutionary Party, José Rafael Abinader tried again in 1990, this time for Constitutional Action, be crowned as the country’s president, in elections characterized by strong insults and allegations of fraud, where for many Juan Bosch and the P wonartido of the Dominican Liberation, but the triumph was given to Joaquín Balaguer.

Abinader obtained 0.25% of the votes cast in those elections.

In his last aspiration to become president as a candidate for the Dominican Social Alliance, in 1996, where the country went to the polls twice to choose the president, which were won for the first time by Leonel Fernández, thanks to the alliances between Joaquin Balaguer and Juan Bosch, José Rafael Abinader on that occasion obtained 3,907 votes, 0.13%.

It is important to note that on that second round, between Peña Gómez and Leonel Fernández, Dr. Abinader supported the PLD and the novel Leonel Fernández.

In 1998 he was elected senator of Santiago by the PRD and in 2000 he supported Hipólito Mejía and in 2008 Miguel Vargas Maldonado.

His death occurred on November 5, 2018, at the age of 89, two years after his son ran for the country’s presidency for the first time.

At almost 53 years old, Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona he is the current presidential candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party. He made his first application for this position in the 2016 elections, held on May 15, where he also sought to elect representatives of the National Congress, municipal and overseas deputies.

In that contest Luis Abinader competed against the current president Danilo Medina, who was running for the second consecutive time to the position, in addition they were Guillermo Moreno, Elías Wessin Chávez, Pelegrín Castillo, Minou Tavárez Mirabal, Hatuey de Camps and Soraya Aquino.

For the 2016 elections, Abinader, along with the Modern Revolutionary Party was in second position with 34.98% of the votes, becoming the main opposition party of the Danilo Medina government.

Before reaching the presidency of the country, he wanted to be a senator of the Santo Domingo province in 2005, through the Dominican Revolutionary Party, but due to the so-called Pink Alliance along with the Christian Social Reformist Party, give up its legislative aspirations.

In 2011, after wanting to run for president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, Abinader withdrew his aspirations to support the candidacy of Hipólito Mejía, forming a pairing that defeated Miguel Vargas MaldonadoThen all powerful in the white party, in elections that marked the deepest crisis of the “jacho on” party.

And that’s how in 2012, he served as the ballot partner of ex-president Mejía for the PRD, losing the elections to Danilo Medina.

After the crisis generated in the Dominican Revolutionary Party, Between 2012 and 2014, a faction of the main leaders and representatives led by Hipólito Mejía and Luis Abinader, passed to the then Dominican Social Alliance (ASD), partido led by the Abinader family, and that after a name change and restructuring was called the Modern Revolutionary Party.

Abinader became the first candidate for the presidency of the PRM in the Extraordinary National Convention “Ana María Acevedo”, held on April 26, 2015, where with more than 70 percent of the votes of that party he managed to beat Hipólito Mejía, Geanilda Vásquez and Amaury Justo Duarte.

Similarly and with 74.11%, Abinader wins the internal primaries of the Modern Revolutionary Party on October 6, 2019, and goes on to become the presidential candidate of that political organization, defeating Hipólito Mejía, again, Wellington Arnaud, Ramón Burgos, Rafy Bueno and Ramón Concepción.

Abinader Corona is an economist, executive president of the Abicor group and vice president of the company Cementos Santo Domingo.

On June 10, in the midst of the presidential campaign, he was diagnosed positive for coronavirus, becoming the first presidential candidate to be affected by the virus, which has also acquired his wife and two of his daughters.

In this his second application, and according to many of the surveys carried out in the country, which place him in an advantageous position, Abinader could achieve the dream that his father pursued on three occasions.

Along with the Abinaders are two other pairs of parents and children who have sought the first magistracy of the State: the Wessin, by the Quisqueyano Christian Democrat (PQDC) and the Castillo, by the Progressive National Force.

None of the six members of these couples has achieved the presidency of the country … so far.
