The port’s birthday had to be canceled twice due to Corona, the 833th birthday of the Port of Hamburg could begin on Friday. Two highlights are expected on Saturday with the tractor ballet and a light show with fireworks.

At least four tugs, maneuverable boats up to 3,000hp, are expected to dance on the water Saturday at 3pm for what the city says is a one-of-a-kind show in the world for classical music. The NDR will stream the tractor ballet live.

Sea of ​​lights and fireworks

At 9:30 pm the light show “The Hamburg Sea of ​​Lights” is scheduled on board an Aida cruise ship, followed by fireworks. This highlight can also be seen here in live streaming. There will also be music on the harbor’s ten birthday stages, including Hamburg Voices, Every Day New Year’s Eve, Tonbandgerät, Roachford and Cosmopauli.

Motto: “Let yourself go, let’s celebrate again”

Until Sunday there will be celebrations on the approximately four kilometer long promenade on the Elbe between the fish auction hall and the Elbphilharmonie. The port’s birthday motto this year is “Cast off, let’s celebrate again”.

Showers and short thunderstorms

Visitors should pack a thick jacket and umbrella on Saturday. In addition to repeated showers and some short thunderstorms, the German Weather Service also announced strong to stormy winds from the northwest. The maximum temperature is 16 degrees.

Guests can also board the ships

On the water, from the merchant ship “Agnes” to the giant cruise ship “AIDAprima”, the sea rescue cruiser “Hamburg” and the four-masted brig “Peking” to the steam tug “Woltmann”. Visitors can often get a closer look at the ships directly on board at the “Open Ship”.

Grand opening

On Friday, the Hamburg Port Birthday was officially inaugurated after a two-year hiatus for Corona. Several hundred thousand guests are expected over the weekend. And also this year they can experience a lot: there is an extensive program for the approximately four kilometer long walk along the Elbe.

Arrival by U-Bahn and S-Bahn is recommended

As many streets are closed between the Fischauktionshalle and the Elbphilharmonie, visitors should travel by metro and S-Bahn. However, the S3 S-Bahn line across the Elbe will be completely closed all Saturday. According to the railway, this is necessary to complete the repair work on a bridge. The other trains run more frequently and for longer until Sunday – in the city center until around 1:30 am. Port ferries may be subject to delays and restrictions due to the temporary closure of Elba. Line 62 connects Altona and Finkenwerder only on weekends.
