The 81-year-old woman and the 88-year-old man, whose names have not been released, found the mask in 2021 while cleaning their house. Both went to a local antique shop and all parties agreed on the price – 158 dollars (150 euros).
French publication Le Monde said the seniors’ lawyer said the mask was “worthless” in the eyes of the two. But it turned out to be a rare piece of African art, created in Gabon in the 19th century by a member of the Fangu people. There are only a few such copies in the world.
The two seniors have accused the antique shop of fraud because it deliberately did not reveal the true value of the work of art. The representatives of the antique shop tried to resolve the situation by paying the couple approximately 300 thousand euros. However, their children have rejected the offer.
