What is “The 800” about?
In 1937, Chinese army soldiers find themselves in a deadly trap. When Shanghai is overrun by Japanese troops, the Chinese retreat to a factory building. But the area is surrounded by the Japanese. 452 brave soldiers are now supposed to be the last bastion of resistance against the invaders. Since the mission is almost hopeless, the commander of the defense forces, Xie Jinyuan (Du Chun), presents it to the outside world in the spirit of morale by saying that there are 800 fighters there standing up for the country.
“The 800”: An underrated war film
The fact that the corona pandemic did not trigger the rampant death of cinemas, but at best accelerated it, was already evident in the media during these difficult times. Despite the virus, Christopher Nolan, for example, was able to impress at the box office with “Tenet”. The same applies to the brilliant war film “The 800”, which was even able to take the crown as the most commercially successful film in this epidemic year. But the audience didn’t pay the same attention – even though he deserved it. Because director Guan Hu (“The Sacrifice”, “Mr. Six”) tells one here true hero storywhich he staged in a gripping way.

“The 800” may in some places use the same patriotic platitudes as many Hollywood films have done, but on a directing and narrative level the Chinese production is convincing across the board. In impressive images peppered with solid special effects, Guan Hu presents a fast-paced war film that hardly gives the audience any time to catch their breath. Although many of the characters remain a bit too pale and superficial with such a number of hits, the director has modeled the war scenes and fight sequences in an almost monumental way. If you liked works like “Dunkirk” or “1917”, you will definitely like this underrated film too.
