The 6 best day trips with the 9 euro ticket from Würzburg

The new 9-euro ticket, which the federal government decided to take as a relief measure as a result of the increased energy prices, will apply from June 1st. The campaign is also intended to strengthen local public transport. This editorial team has put together six possible excursion tips for short trips that are possible with the cheap ticket.

1. Hiking in Franconian Switzerland near Ebermannstadt

How do I get there and how long do I need? Ebermannstadt in Franconian Switzerland can be reached by public transport in around two and a half hours. From Würzburg, you can take the Regional Express (RE) via Schweinfurt in the direction of Nuremberg. With a change in Forchheim you reach the destination station Ebermannstadt. Alternatively, and with two changes in Fürth and Forchheim, you can even cover the distance in 2 hours and 17 minutes.

Who is the excursion suitable for? A day in Franconian Switzerland is worthwhile for families, nature lovers or hiking enthusiasts. If you are not that good on foot, you should think about what you want to do in advance, as the distances are sometimes long.

What can we do here? Franconian Switzerland lures with short to long hikes – for example to the Neideck castle ruins from Ebermannstadt. The ascent of the Ehrenbürg, better known as “Walberla”, from Wiesenthau or Kirchehrenbach is suitable for families. Both can be reached by train from Forchheim before the last stop in Ebermannstadt. A visit to the stalactite cave is also worthwhile binge hole in Streitberg or a canoe tour on the Wiesent from Muggendorf. This requires a hike or an additional bus ride. And the tourism region in Upper Franconia also has a lot to offer in culinary terms.

Special tip: And even railway fans who haven’t had enough of traveling by train after the two-hour journey will get their money’s worth in Franconian Switzerland. The museum railway “Dampfbahn Fränkische Schweiz” commutes from Ebermannstadt to Behringersmühle. Since May 1st, the Museum Association’s steam and diesel trains have been running the 16-kilometer route through the picturesque Wiesenttal every Sunday and public holiday until the end of October. 2nd zoo visit in Nuremberg

How do I get there and how long do I need? It takes one hour and 40 minutes to travel from the Würzburg main station to the Tiergarten in Nuremberg – all you have to do is change at the Nuremberg main station to tram line 5 in the direction of the Tiergarten (currently SEV bus line “E5”). For day-trippers who want to see Nuremberg, the journey from Würzburg only takes one hour and 13 minutes.

Who is the excursion suitable for? A visit to Nuremberg Zoo is particularly worthwhile for animal lovers and families and can easily fill a whole day.

What can we do here? Giraffes, polar bears or meerkats: a total of 310 different animal species (as of 2020) live in Nuremberg Zoo. In addition to the normal enclosures, children have the opportunity to learn about animals themselves in the children’s zoo and, for example, to familiarize themselves with horse grooming. There are dinosaurs on display and you can learn about human evolution. A walk through the banking district with its imposing high-rise buildings that characterize Frankfurt’s skyline is also worthwhile. And on the Zeil, one of the most famous shopping streets in Germany in the middle of the city, you can stroll and shop to your heart’s content.

Special tip: A detour to Frankfurt Airport is not just for “plane spotters” or airplane friends, but also for those who like to wallow in wanderlust. 4. Bathing trip to the Brombachsee in Middle Franconia

How do I get there and how long do I need? With the regional train, the journey from Würzburg to the Brombachsee (to Langlau) takes between 1.39 and 2.15 hours – depending on whether you travel via Gunzenhausen, Nuremberg or Pleinfeld. Langlau, Ramsberg and Pleinfeld are suitable as destination stations, with the lake being about a kilometer away on foot from the first two stops and about three kilometers from the latter.

Who is the excursion suitable for? At the Brombachsee, water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers in particular get their money’s worth.

What can we do here? A day can be spent by the water at Brombachsee: swimming, lying on the sandy beach, pedal boating, stand-up paddling or even windsurfing and kite surfing are all possible here – for example at the Langlau leisure center on the Kleiner Brombachsee. The facilities in Pleinfeld and Ramsberg am Großer Brombachsee also have a sandy beach with sunbathing areas and children’s play equipment.

5th state exhibition “Typical Franconia?” in Ansbach

How do I get there and how long do I need? Visiting the state exhibition “Typically Franconian?” (May 25th to November 6th) in Ansbach is a real short trip. From Würzburg main station, the train journey with the regional train takes just over an hour.

Who is the excursion suitable for? For everyone who has ever asked themselves what is actually typically Franconian, who want to learn something about Franconian history and the regions, or who have always wanted to know what Lower Franconia and the two neighboring administrative districts of Upper and Middle Franconia actually have in common to have.

What can we do here? The exhibition is located 600 meters from the train station in the orangery in the courtyard garden near the residence. It was laid out like a hike crisscrossing Franconia, explains exhibition director Rainhard Riepertinger from the responsible House of Bavarian History. Special tip: After visiting the exhibition, a stroll through the baroque and medieval old town is almost a must. 6. The Erlangen Bergkirchweih from June 2nd to 13th

How do I get there and how long do I need? The mountains are calling – from June 2nd to 13th. There are two ways to get to Erlangen from Würzburg. Either with the regional express via Bamberg (direct connection or change once) or with a change in Fürth. Both trips take about an hour and a half.

Who is the excursion suitable for? For everyone who likes to celebrate peacefully with lots of people, drink beer – and otherwise always has to drive. Because with the 9-euro ticket you can confidently treat yourself to a second light beer – and still get home safely.

What can we do here? One of the best-known folk festivals in the Free State will take place for the 267th time in 2022 after the Corona break. Children can also experience a lot here: In addition to a Ferris wheel and a chain carousel, there are many other attractions at the Bergkirchweih. After the folk festival, beer fans can still visit part of the “Keller”.
