TURIN (ITALPRESS) – On the occasion of the Turin Jazz Festival, a live performance of music, dance and painting was held to the tune of the Gianpaolo Petrini Big Band, “distributed” in three locations within the Officine Grandi Riparazioni: Fucine, Duomo and Binario 3. The musicians, connected to each other by OpNet’s 5G Private Network, were able to perform a Jazz improvisation thanks to the performances guaranteed by the technology used.
The Turin performance is part of the “5G Audiovisual Broadcast Broadband Network” project in which OpNet is Ray Way’s technological partner for Wireless Connectivity and Private 5G, in collaboration with Nokia, as part of the consortium of partners of which Rai Way itself is the leader having won, in July 2022, the tender of the Ministry of Economic Development (today Mimit) “5G audiovisual 2022”, being able to access a loan of 1 million euros.
The complexity and high degree of innovation of the experimentation are achieved thanks to the contribution of the lead partner and the 11 partners that make up the aggregation: Rai, with its Departments Research Center for Technological Innovation and Experimentation and TV Production Center of Turin, Municipality of Turin, Rohde&Schwarz, OpNet, Politecnico di Milano, MainStreaming, Impersive, Kinecar, RETESETTE, La Sicilia Multimedia and the Teatro Massimo of Palermo.
The one-year project involves testing 5G in Broadcast mode with coverage of the areas of the cities of Palermo and Turin and in Broadband mode with the creation of innovative use cases.
After the Palermo stop on 17 March, the experimentation came to life in Turin.
On the technological innovation front, for the content distribution part, using Edge Computing solutions, the possible synergy between the two networks (5G Broadcast and CDN) was successfully tested through a transparent switching system for the user, seamless type.
Furthermore, with regard to the production and contribution of live content, the network and audio/video encodings have been optimized to achieve very low latency.
“Our objective in the experimentation – says Luisa Guida, 5G Program Director OpNet – is to evaluate the Private 5G Stand Alone solution for the collection and real-time sharing of high quality audio and video content, guaranteeing a high degree of reliability of the network, uplink capacity with minimal and constant latency. Such a latency, as in the case of the 5G Jazz Jam Session in Turin, that it is not perceived by the human ear and therefore able to enable musicians located in physical areas distant from each other, to perform a jazz performance lasting over a ‘Now”. “Furthermore – he adds – the ability of Private 5G to effectively manage heterogeneous traffic flows (even with different levels of service) and to interact simply with Edge Computing solutions, makes it possible to transmit Live content to Broadband 5G users without the need to set up local management structures. An exciting experience that made it possible to measure the full value of 5G SA technology in the context of Private Networks. The ability of OpNet and its partners to design, configure and integrate network solutions has enabled the development of a challenging and highly technologically complex Use Case”.
“Thanks to its 5G Private Network solution, Opnet proposes itself as an enabler of the potential of 5G technology which, in the case of the 5G Audiovisual project, has found application in the Entertainment sector, with the awareness that its areas of use are already numerous today and stimulated by a growing demand – underlines Stefano Zacutti, Chief Revenue & Strategies Officer OpNet -. OpNet is a pioneer in Italy in 5G 3GPP SA Technology, thanks to the licensed frequency spectrum and the HUB of technological and managerial skills developed in the radio technology sector. At OpNet we build physical networks, but above all corporate networks through a synthesis of ever new skills. The journey with Rai Way and the other companies involved in the project is an example of how we intend to carry out our mission, with work, competence and synergistic collaboration with all the most innovative companies in the country”.
Mauro D’Onofrio, Head of Innovation&Research of the Technology Department of Rai Way, responsible for the project, underlined that “following the success of the Live Theater VR360 event in Palermo, in OGR of Turin we have created an even more articulated and fully harmony with this magnificent location, ideal for creating synergies between the artistic world and technological innovation. We are experimenting with the cooperation between 5G Broadcast and 5G Broadband transmission technologies, which in perspective presents itself as an effective solution to the problem of network congestion, on the occasion of traffic peaks during live events with very large audiences”. “The technologies used – he added – also allow the production and contribution of live audiovisual contents and highly innovative artistic scenarios thanks to very low latencies, such as the jazz improvisation of musicians located in different locations, with the integration of VR Art and Dance and the contemporary fruition in the Metaverse”.
