Do you want to experiment a little? Discover these 5 romantic comedies
Whether you’re in love with someone special or flying alone with a butterfly (welcome to the club), Valentine’s Day is the perfect time of year to watch a romantic comedy.
There’s something about seeing people’s deepest feelings and insecurities on screen that we love and won’t hear anyone use the term “guilty taste.” There is a reason why romantic comedy is one of the most popular film genres.
But, you may have already seen all the classics. We are constantly looking for new films of the genre and lesser-known gems on the best streaming services. Here are 5 romantic comedies you probably haven’t seen.
1. ADVENTURELAND
- Available to rent in: Amazon Prime Video y Apple TV+
Adventureland, a film we will never stop recommending, is a story brilliantly tied to nostalgia for a time when we probably weren’t even alive. In the ’80s, college graduate James (Jesse Eisenberg) falls in love with Em (Kristen Stewart).
Everything that involves young love and a mechanic (Ryan Reynolds, no less). It’s a charming story that will make you smile every time you watch it again.

2. THAT’S WHY THEY CALL IT LOVE
- Available to rent in: Amazon Prime Video y Apple TV+
Based on a true story by Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily, this film stars Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan as a young couple who have been on a couple of dates and broken up. However, when Emily is hospitalized, the pressure falls on Kumail as her “next of kin” to place her in an induced coma.
As Emily fights for her life, Kumail faces her fight for a career in comedy, Emily’s cold parents, and her own family problems in an understandably difficult situation. It may not seem like a romantic comedy, but it is sometimes very funny and has a happy ending: the two characters are married in real life!
3. FRANCES HA
- Streaming en: Amazon Prime Video
Barbie director Greta Gerwig stars (and co-writes) the title character in this smart romantic comedy from Noah Baumbach (her now husband). We say romantic comedy, but for us it is more of a film about learning to love yourself.
When her best friend from college decides to move in with her long-term boyfriend, Frances, a 27-year-old aspiring dancer, realizes she is in a real dilemma in her life. She doesn’t even have a credit card and declares herself “not yet an adult.” If you’ve seen any of Baumbach’s films, you’ll know that his style and dialogue are some of the best there is, and that’s the case again here.

4. BLUE JAY
- Streaming and: Netflix, PLEX
Blue Jay is a little more romantic than comedy, but it is a very delicate film that came out of nowhere and left us impressed. Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson are practically the only characters on screen in a story that we think would work just as well in a play.
Old boyfriends who meet again by chance at the supermarket, Jim and Amanda walk down memory lane together through the town where they grew up. Their connection is obvious and they have a real spark together, so why didn’t it work out?
In addition to being a visual delight, this film’s soundtrack is absolutely essential and heartbreaking in equal measure.
5. THE MAP OF THE PERFECT MOMENTS
- Streaming en: Amazon Prime Video
We could have put another Prime Video romantic comedy here, with the excellent Palm Springs, but we feel that “The Map of Perfect Moments” is more of a hidden gem, and a little more romantic than Andy Samberg’s film.
Kathryn Newton and Kyle Allen are excellent in the lead roles, two teenagers trapped in a time loop for unknown reasons who decide to join forces to capture all the perfect little moments in the world and soon come together in a unique shared experience. Truly very funny, but beware of an emotional semi-truck in the middle of the film.
