The 43rd ASEAN Summit will be held at JCC Senayan, Jakarta, on 5-7 September 2023. Heads of state and representatives from 22 countries will attend the international conference.
“Almost all (came). There was a president, a prime minister, a vice president, complete with everything,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Friday (1/9).
The heads of state of the partner countries present at ASEAN Summit including Vice President of the United States (US) Kamala Harris, Chinese Prime Minister (PM) Li Qiang, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin was represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“Vice President (US), Prime Minister (Japan) God willing,” said Retno.
“But once again I speak per second, I cannot fully confirm it to the point where he is present,” he added.
For information, there are 22 countries and 9 international organizations that will attend the ASEAN Summit. The 22 countries consist of 11 ASEAN member countries, including Timor Leste, which will be represented by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. Then nine partner countries namely South Korea, Japan, India, China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, United States (US).
The ASEAN Summit was also attended by two invited countries, namely Bangladesh, which is currently the Chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and Cook Islands, which is the Chair of the Pacific Island Forum (PIF).
“This is a translation of an inclusive approach to the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific. And there will be cooperation signed between the ASEAN Secretariat and the PIF and IORA Secretariat. Therefore, besides the PIF Chair and IORA Chair, the PIF Secretary General and IORA Secretary General, which means there will be 2 other organizations, they will also come,” Retno said in a written statement, Monday (28/8).
Retno said the ASEAN Summit would also be attended by the IMF and the World Bank (World Bank). Two international observer organizations were also present at the ASEAN Plus Three meeting: the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomics Research Office (AMRO) and the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS).
“An international organization is a comprehensive partner of ASEAN, namely the United Nations, whose delegation will be led by the Secretary General of the United Nations. In addition, there is the founder and CEO of the World Trade Forum,” he said.
Retno continued, in ASEAN SummitPresident Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is also planning to hold bilateral meetings with a number of heads of state. The meetings included Canada, Japan, South Korea and China.
“There are so many, 13 I forgot. With Canada, Japan, Korea, China, there are still many requests, the IMF has asked, and the Secretary General of the United Nations has asked, Australia,” said Retno.
