The 42nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO opened on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the institution’s headquarters in Paris, in the presence of delegates and representatives of the 194 members and associate members of the organization.

Chaired by Mirela Miculescu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Delegate of Romania to UNESCO, the 42nd session will be marked by several activities and interventions by States.

It also includes a segment dedicated to the transformation of education financing including the approval of a series of proposals on improving multilateral education financing.

The Ivorian delegation is led by Professor Mariatou Koné, Minister of National Education and Literacy who is also representative of global education on the high-level commission on digital development.

Mariatou Koné also represents French-speaking Africa on the Steering Committee of the International Commission on the Future of Education. This second day of the general conference was marked by the reappointment of Côte d’Ivoire to the high-level steering committee for Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4).

The Ivorian Minister of National Education and Literacy, Professor Mariatou Koné, will represent Côte d’Ivoire with her Ethiopian counterpart, Africa, within this high-level body.

The decision was taken unanimously by the steering committee, meeting on the sidelines of the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference, this Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

The committee praised the leadership of Minister Mariatou Koné for her significant contribution and her involvement in the process of transformation of the Ivorian education system through the organization of the Estates General of National Education and Literacy (EGENA).

His initiative constitutes a textbook case for Africa and the world. For Minister Mariatou Koné, this renewal is to the credit of the President of the Republic, Mr. Alassane Ouattara, who has placed education at the heart of the priorities of government action.

The High-Level Steering Committee for SDG 4 – Education is an advisory body established by UNESCO whose missions are to provide strategic guidance to Member States and the education community, formulate recommendations for catalytic action, advocacy for appropriate funding and monitoring of progress.
