The 2nd Chess Bundesliga 1985/86 was the sixth season of the 2nd German Chess Bundesliga.
The competitions took place on November 10th, December 1st and 22nd, 1985, January 12th, February 2nd and 23rd, March 16th, April 13th and May 4th, 1986. The playoffs took place from November 23rd to 25th. Held in May 1986.
Ten teams each played a simple round-robin tournament in the North, West, Southwest and South relays.
The North relay included the state associations of Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, the West relay included the North Rhine-Westphalia regional association, the Southwest relay consisted of the Baden, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland regional associations, while the South relay included clubs belonged to the regional associations of Bavaria and Württemberg. The four season winners were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in 1986/87, while the number of relegated teams depended on the outcome of the 1st Bundesliga. The North, West and South seasons each had to accept two promoted teams from the regional associations, so that the number of relegated teams in these seasons could be at least 1 (if no relegated team from the 1st Bundesliga had to be accepted) and a maximum of 5 (if all relegated teams were eliminated). the 1st Bundesliga belonged to the same season). The 2nd League Southwest took in three promoted teams from the regional associations, so that the number of relegated teams there could be at least 2 and a maximum of 6. One team was relegated from the 1st Bundesliga in 1985/86 in each season, so that this season two teams were relegated from the 2nd League North, South and West, and three from the 2nd League Southwest. Placement was initially determined by the number of team points. If there was a tie, tiebreaks were played for promotion and relegation, otherwise the number of board points decided.
The North season had to take on two relegated teams from the 1984/85 Bundesliga, Delmenhorster SK and Braunschweiger SC, while SV Wilmersdorf and SV Osnabrück were promoted from the Regionalliga North. Both promotion and relegation were decided early. Hamburg’s SG BUE (which only managed to avoid relegation in the tie-break last year) was already promoted two rounds before the end, while Wilmersdorf and Osnabrück had no chance of escaping relegation before the last round.

SG Enger-Spenge and König Frechen were relegated from the 1984/85 Bundesliga to the 2nd League West, while Sportfreunde Katernberg and Essener SG 1904 were promoted from the NRW League.
In the promotion race, SG Enger-Spenge prevailed by one point over SF Dortmund-Brackel. At the bottom of the table, Frechen and Düsseldorfer SG Rochade were already relegated before the last round.

The 2nd League Southwest did not have to accept anyone relegated from the 1984/85 Bundesliga, while Karlsruher SF, the Saarbrücken Chess Association 1970 and SK Gießen were promoted from the regional associations.
The decisions about promotion and two of the three relegation places were only made in tiebreaks. In these, Karlsruhe secured promotion, while SF Frankfurt and SC Kettig had to be relegated along with SC Eppingen.

No club from the 1984/85 Bundesliga was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga South, while SSV Marbach and SV Gräfelfing were promoted from the regional associations.
SV Fortuna Regensburg rose two points ahead of five rivals. SK Gräfelfing was at the bottom of the table, while the decision about the second relegated team was only made in the last round due to a defeat by SV Tübingen 1870 against their direct competitor Stuttgarter Schachfreunde 1879.
