If we already knew that the filmmaker and actress Agnès Jaoui, like the British-American director Christopher Nolan, were going to receive an honorary César, the list of 111 nominations divided into 24 categories (see below) was particularly awaited. And unsurprisingly, Anatomy of a fall, our latest Palme d’Or, also in the running to win five Oscars (see article published yesterday), is particularly represented there. With 11 nominations, notably in the categories Best Actress (Sandra Hüller), Best Film, and Best Direction, Justine Triet’s film should logically be able to fill its trophy room a little more.
But the most represented film, with 12 nominations, is The animal kingdom, one of the most beautiful surprises of 2023. According to our information, the voters (members) of the Academy should largely reward this film with its delirious storyline, which defies the codes of the fantastic against an eco-friendly backdrop, magnificently carried by Romain Duris. The third big favorite of the next ceremony is the work of Jeanne Herry, I will always see your faces, one of the great successes of last year.
In addition to these three so-called millionaire films (because they all exceeded one million admissions), eyes will be focused on the actor Raphaël Queunard, the one who clearly burst onto the screen in 2023. Nominated both in the Best Actor category , for his remarkable performance in the film Yannickas well as in the Best Male Revelation of the Year category, for his role in Hunting dog, the 32-year-old actor is strongly expected to leave with (at least) a statuette. In the first category, it will compete (in particular) with the Franco-Belgian ones Arieh Worthalter, exceptional in The Goldman Trial(8 nominations) the film by Cédric Kahn, which narrates the second trial of Pierre Goldman (the singer’s half-brother), suspected of having killed two pharmacists during an armed robbery in December 1969.

On the headliner side, we find among others Marion Cotillard (for Little girl blue) and Virginie Efira (for Love and forests) who will compete for the crown of Best Actress, as well as Leïla Bekhti and Adèle Exarchopoulos – both in the casting of I will always see your faces – nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. Among the men, Romain Duris, Benjamin Lavernhe, stunning in the biopic on Abbé Pierre, and Pio Marmaï, also in the casting of the film Yannick.
Note that three women are present this time in the Best Director category (Justine Triet for Anatomy of a fallCatherine Breillat for Last summerJeanne Herry for I will always see your faces), perhaps a response to the controversy of last year, when no female director was named… Let us highlight in passing the presence of the Consent, with two nominations. Kim Higelin in the Best Female Revelation category, and Vanessa Filho in the Best Adaptation category.
A small feat for this film, which tells the story of the controlling relationship between Vanessa Springora and the writer Gabriel Matzneff, when we remember its crash during its theatrical release. Only 40,000 tickets sold in the first week… the film was ultimately saved thanks to an XXL buzz on Tik Tok, driven by young people, leading the film to finally exceed 500,000 admissions. “ This is the first time that a film in France has been saved in this way by social networks », underlines Marc Missionnier, its producer, who regrets in passing that “ Jean-Paul Rouve was not selected » in the Best Actor category.
To find out about the lucky “Caesar winners”, we must nevertheless wait for the 49th Caesar Ceremony, next Friday February 23. A great evening which will be chaired (and therefore hosted) by Valérie Lemercier, which will be broadcast live on Canal+.
