The 2024 Budget and the Future of Finance Minister Asen Vasilev

“If I can’t deal with the 2024 Budget, I will leave directly.” Finance Minister Asen Vasilev said this in the “120 Minutes” program on bTV.

Talks with partners about the budget have led to certain compromises, he announced.

The partners of the PP-DB from the GERB party have expressed concern that the revenue part was slightly inflated and that is why a correction of the accounts was necessary at the last moment, the finance minister said.

“If we don’t have a balance of 3% this year and we don’t achieve a balance of 3% next year, it means that one of the main requests of the cabinet for the Eurozone will be failed. If such a thing happens – I will leave directly, but I personally do not believe that it will happen. He works very hard so that it doesn’t happen,” Vassilev said.

Vassilev also commented on the removal of the derogation for “Lukoil”, which also led to tension among the parties supporting the cabinet – GERB and DPS.

“The main role of the state should be to eliminate the monopoly of the Lukoil refinery on the Bulgarian market,” he believes.

Vassilev also outlined what follows.

“There are two goals of the derogation – that the money does not go to Putin and that the prices do not increase, so it had to be smooth. A solution was found for both purposes. On the first of January – as short a period as possible to limit exports to third countries, and on the first of March to stop the use of Russian oil for the domestic market,” added the finance minister.

Asen Vassilev confirmed that there is information that “Lukoil” is being sold and it is also circulating among the parliamentary groups.

“The state is not involved in the sale. The price is determined by the potential for future earnings. The derogation is going away anyway and the new owner must secure non-Russian oil,” he further commented.

I expect revenue growth for next year by 22%, Vasilev summarized.
