In the golden autumn of September, the rowing event meets the Suzhou River again. The 2023 Shanghai Rowing Open will start on the Suzhou River on the afternoon of the 16th. Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng launched the competition.
The slogan of this event is “Tide of Boating Power” and will be held on the waters of Suzhou River from September 16th to 17th. Rowing athletes from all over the world gather in Shanghai to compete on the same field, promote the exchange and popularization of rowing culture, and work together to help Shanghai build a world-famous sports city.
This year’s competition has been upgraded and expanded. In addition to the college group and club group, new elite group and youth group competitions have been added to further strengthen the professionalism. A total of 51 eight-person boat teams, 10 four-person boat teams, and 14 single-person boat athletes participated, with a total number of nearly 700 people. The international influence of this event has been further deepened. By inviting top international players to participate, it has enhanced the global attention of the event, allowing more rowing enthusiasts around the world to see, pay attention to, and fall in love with rowing. It also allows Shanghai citizens to see the world’s top rowing enthusiasts. The rowing team shows off its skills on the doorstep.
Vice Mayor Xie Dong attended the opening ceremony. International Rowing Federation President Christophe Roland sent a congratulatory video. Tong Lixin, director of the Water Sports Management Center of the State Sports General Administration and chairman of the Chinese Rowing Association, delivered a speech. National referee Li Fei and Shanghai Jiao Tong University rowing team Lin Qiming took the oath on behalf of all referees and athletes respectively. Representatives from the Cambridge University Rowing Team, Oxford Brookes University Rowing Team and the Australian National Rowing Team and Chinese rowing athletes brought water from the rivers of their respective cities, and gathered and blended to form the English word rowing.
Shanghai is built on the water and thrives on the water. It has an indissoluble bond with rowing for more than a hundred years. Today, Shanghai is making every effort to build a modern socialist international metropolis with world influence, and “one river and one river” has become a representative space and iconic carrier.
