The 2022 Montluçon Christmas market has suffered from a drop in attendance

For the last day of the Christmas market this Saturday 24 December, the results for 2022 are mixed. For his first participation, Arnaud Bonnet is quite satisfied. The young man was able to discover his illustrations of Montluçon and its surroundings and his company Montluçon Pictures. But he discovers that the participation is very random.

There were a lot of people the first weekend. During the week the attendances are very different from one day to the next without anyone knowing why. For example, on Monday I worked well, while on Thursday we didn’t see anyone.

Fewer families

The regulars of the Christmas market, Mégane and Giovanni, of the Chalet Alsacien, confirm that the first weekend of the market, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December, was the best. The pair note, however, that overall the 2022 market has suffered from a lack of audience.

For us the 2022 edition was correct. We are fortunate to be in the food business and have customers who return to visit us every year. But there is less family on the way

Points to improve

Other merchants make the same observation that the clientele hasn’t been there. If the economic conjunction has worked, because other Christmas markets have not worked very well, according to several professionals, they believe that some points could be improved regarding the Montluçonnais market.
“Even if I’m not finishing too badly, my best year at the market remains my first, in 2019, when it was still Place Jean-Jaurès,” explains Fall Ngoné, creative at Algui Wax.

“There was a more cocooning and more village side. It was safe for the kids. Also, being right next to the skating rink brought in a more family crowd. Parents and grandparents walked around the chalets while the children skated ”, underline various traders.
