In the world of fashion, few events are as big, Instagram-worthy, and in high demand as the annual Met Gala in New York City.
The event, known for its star-studded guest list and extravagant costumes, was themed this year after the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld.
The invitation-only gala raises funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
An estimated 400 guests attended this year’s event.
The invited guests were asked to dress in homage to the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld to match this year’s theme – ‘Karl Lagerfeld: The Beauty Line’.
The designer, who died in 2019 at the age of 85, often wore dark sunglasses and wore his white hair in a ponytail and was often photographed alongside his famous pet, Choupette.
Retired tennis star Roger Federer, Grammy-winning singer Dua Lipa, actress Penelope Cruz and writer, actress and producer Michaela Cowell are co-chairs this year, along with Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
Brittney Griner, the NBA star who was imprisoned in Russia, attended Monday night with her “wife.”
Last year, the Metropolitan Museum’s Great Hall was decked out with 275,000 roses of pink, but the adornments don’t compare to the outfits celebrities flaunt on their way to the event.
However, much of the public’s eyes were on the red carpet and the extravagant outfits of the attendees – which last year included Kim Kardashian wearing a $4.8m (£3.84m) rhinestone-encrusted dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe.
This year, Kardashian wore the pearl-studded Schiaparelli design, which was created after her visit last week to Karl Lagerfeld’s office in Paris, where she said she was getting “a little inspiration for the Metropolitan Museum.”
“I just wanted to feel glamorous, and I wanted the pearls, which means so much to Karl,” Kim told Vogue on the red carpet.
Her sisters Kylie and Kendall also attended.
Individual tickets to this year’s event are priced at $50,000, with tables starting at $300,000.
Actresses Priyanka Chopra, Elle Fanning, Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham and singer Rita Ora attended.
Rapper Lil Nas X arrived looking like some kind of mythical creature, dressed in pearls and plated silver.
The actor, accused in multiple cases, Jonathan Majors, was also scheduled to appear as Valentino’s guest, but “mutually agreed” with the fashion house not to attend in the wake of assault charges stemming from the March incident.
Another notable guest not attending this year was Choupette the cat — although pop star Douga Cat and actor Jared Leto dressed up as cats.
And a post on the official page of the cat via Instagram said: “Many people invited me to walk the red carpet at Met Gala 2023 in honor of my father, but we preferred to stay warm at home.” “.
The special event was not broadcast, but details of the red carpet events were broadcast live on Vogue’s social media platforms.
