The 1995 Princess Diana Interview: BBC Investigated for Arranging Conversation with Martin Bashir

The 1995 interview has been in the news a lot in recent years. For example, two years ago the BBC investigated how the conversation with journalist Martin Bashir was arranged. Martin is said to have used false information to gain Diana’s trust. In the interview, the princess spoke out about her unhappy marriage to Prince Charles.

The emails had previously been requested by a journalist investigating the interview, but the BBC did not want to cooperate. The judge found this suspicious and called the BBC’s working methods ‘inconsistent, incorrect and unreliable’. Not wanting to provide the emails would be ‘a cause for serious concerns’.

The BBC has apologized to the investigating journalist for not wanting to release the emails. The news organization has not yet responded substantively.

The interview, which aired in November 1995, attracted a record 22.8 million British viewers. Diana and then-Prince Charles split shortly after the broadcast. The conversation meant his big breakthrough for Martin.

Diana is still commemorated in countless ways to this day:
