The Malaysian Good Vibes Festival demands 2 million pounds (more than 2.3 million euros) in compensation from The 1975. If the British band does not pay within seven days, the organizer will take legal action in the United Kingdom.
The British band’s performance on the first day of the festival at the end of last month was halted after a controversial kiss between frontman Matty Healy and bassist Ross MacDonald. After that, the three-day festival in the capital Kuala Lumpur was canceled. As a result, some artists could no longer perform.
A claim letter was already released on August 7, but more details are now known. Festival organizer Future Sound Asia (FSA) demands that the British band “acknowledge liability”. The 1975 has until August 14 to pay the compensation, the newspaper writes Malay Mail.
According to David Mathew, legal adviser to the festival organizer, FSA attributes much of the claim to singer Healy’s breach of contract.
“Healy’s representative has categorically given a written guarantee prior to the show that he and The 1975’s live performance ‘will adhere to all local guidelines and also regulations’ while performing in Malaysia,” he told the Malay Mail.
“Despite this, the warranty was ignored. The band’s actions were also in clear violation of the contract with FSA.”
If the band does not pay, FSA will take legal action in the UK. The Malaysian government decided after the performance that The 1975 may never perform in the country again.
