A young man who entered the grounds of Windsor Palace, where Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating Christmas, was arrested this morning and is suspected of possessing an assault weapon, Reuters reported.

According to police in the Thames, the 19-year-old offender from Southampton was unable to enter any of the buildings in the palace complex. Its penetration into the guarded site was registered almost immediately by the security systems, BTA writes.

The incident happened at 8.30 in the morning. Members of the royal family have been notified. Police believe there was no threat to society.

Breaks in the security of royal residences are rare. The most serious during the reign of Elizabeth II was in 1982, when an offender climbed the wall of Buckingham Palace in London and walked around the room where she lay in bed. In 2016, a man with a previous murder sentence sneaked into the perimeter of Buckingham Palace and asked if the queen was home, Reuters recalled.
