18 Watt charger cannot fast charge
At the iCulture editorial office, we are busy with a charging test, in which we are testing various adapters and charging methods. For example, we connected the MagSafe charger to power adapters with different wattages. We also started fast charging with the 20 Watt adapter that Apple recommends for the iPhone 12. Did you have one last year iPhone 11 Pro (Max) cooked , then you got an 18 Watt adapter there. Good for you new iPhone 12 to charge, you would think. But fast charging is not there. Apple reports in a support document that for fast charging an iPhone 12 at least a 20 Watt power adapter is required. Also in the technical specs of the iPhone 12 models is now mentioned that you need at least 20 Watt:
Suitable for fast charging: 11 to 50% charge in 30 minutes with 20W adapter or more (sold separately)
Apple no longer puts an adapter in the box to save the earth and because the company assumes that everyone still has an adapter. Not everyone will have the required 20 Watt adapter, so you will have to purchase it separately. You could also immediately go for the slightly heavier work and immediately opt for a 30 Watt adapter, but it is a lot bigger, heavier and more expensive.
Apple 20 Watt USB-C Power Adapter: 25 euro
Apple 30 Watt USB-C Power Adapter: 55 euro
If you are short on cash and still want to charge quickly, you could also buy IKEA ÅSKSTORM. It comes in two variants, one of which is suitable:
IKEA ÅSKSTORM 23 Watt wit: €9,99 (unsuitable)
IKEA ÅSKSTORM 40 Watt dark gray: €19,99 (fit)
With this you can also use your MacBook load. The white version is indeed 23 Watts on paper, but the USB-C port inside only delivers 18 Watts, so that’s not enough. In the dark gray version it is 30 Watt, enough to make a light MacBook charged and also enough to keep you iPhone 12 too fast charging.
Other alternatives Furthermore, you could of course also use the USB-C adapter that comes with you iPad or MacBook was delivered, if it is more than 20 Watt. You could also choose not to load quickly, because this will be more harmful to the battery is. Are you closing iPhone every night on the charger, then fast charging is not necessary at all. You can charge your device slowly with any USB-A or USB-C adapter, if you have the right cable.
We have our tip about you iPhone fast charging therefore adapted to this new situation. With the 18 Watt adapter you can use the iPhone 8 up to and including iPhone 11 Pro Max fast charging, but not the iPhone 12 -serie.
