The Czech Hockey Eighteen won in the final match of Basic Group A at the World Championships in Landshut over the defending champion Canada 6: 5 in overtime. He will go from second place in the quarterfinals to Switzerland, which finished third in Group B.
In the time of 61:50, the captain Jiří Kulich decided in the power play, who completed the hat-trick and is the best scorer of the tournament with six goals from three matches. The Czechs used the numerical advantage a total of five times.
“It’s a lifelong experience for me. Someone does hockey for money, someone for other things. If I finished hockey after the season, I’ll remember this match. Hockey was invented in Canada, and I’m really happy for every win against this opponent.” said coach Jakub Petr.
Coach Jakub Petr could no longer count on the attack with his injured 16-year-old son Dominik, who was replaced by Vojtěch Polák. After the defeat with the USA 2: 6, the composition of individual attacks changed.
The Czech team had to catch up with the shortfall after 115 seconds. Goalkeeper Spunar, who replaced Schnattinger, was defeated by the lone Moldenhauer. He got the attempt after a repulsed Dragicevice shot.
Dyck, on the other hand, was first threatened by Melovský, and at 5:59 the Czechs rejoiced in the settlement when Mastrodomenic was expelled. After only six seconds, Bareš took advantage of the numerical advantage, flowing Hamar’s shot from the blue line.
Spunar then covered the chance of Lorenz, who got into renumbering with Schuurman. Shapovaliv, on the other hand, threatened. In the 15th minute, the Czech youth was helped by a post after Fantilli’s shot from the right circle, and then they also defended themselves during Slavíček’s penalty.
Petr’s team also used the second power play to eliminate the 16-year-old favorite NHL draft for 2023 Bedard. Hamara returned the puck to the blue line at Captain Kulich, who hit his wrist across the screen and turned the situation around.
It was leveled in 73 seconds. Canada took advantage of the numerical exclusion of Dvořák. Fantilli’s first attempt was blocked by Prčík, but then the same player got to the puck again and beat Špunar.
In the 27th minute, Howe and Delic went to pay attention, the Czech team had a power play five against three, which it used after 40 seconds from a hit after Hamar’s shot and Šapovaliv’s work in front of the goal area with his second goal in the Bareš match.
Canadian coach Nolan Baumgartner still took on an unsuccessful coaching challenge and the advantage of two players in the field continued. But they could not raise Kulich, Hamara or Šalé.
During Soukup’s stay on the penalty bench, Špunar dealt with Goyette’s arrival. Dycka then threatened Soukup. In the 35th minute, however, the Canadians quickly renumbered and turned Goyette’s pass into a Dragicevic equalizer.
In 32 seconds, however, the Czechs led again and for the third time struck in a power play. Davies was penalized by Kulich, who was sent to the left circle by Šalé, and the Karlovy Vary talent scored again.
“We are glad that we managed it, because it is not won over Canada every day. We have a few good signals in powerlifting and we talk a lot about it with the boys and try different things, fortunately we have it there,” said forward Eduard Šalé.
After 100 seconds of the third part, the Canadians made up for the loss again. After Filmon’s penetration, the puck arrived for Spunar Siepmann. In the 45th minute, Melovský did not change the possibility after Bareš’s pass. At 49:06, the defenders of the triumph turned the situation around. After Pickering’s shot, he made his way out of Delic’s hit. Slavíček could answer, on the other hand, Fantilli had a chance.
In the 58th minute, after Goyette’s mistake, Kulich passed to Šalé, who forced an extension. This was not averted by Bedard either, and in the last second of the third period by Šalé, who circled the goal and hit the post. In the setting after Howe’s foul on Kulich himself, the hero of the match in a game of four against three shot from the right circle decided.
