The Intercommunity Committee for the Sanitation of Lake Bourget (CISALB) has renovated the 18 flood markers distributed in the city center: an important act of restoring our heritage and raising awareness of the risks of flooding.
The 18 flood markers distributed in the city center were recently renovated by the CISALB, with the support of the local paint company Radiani, which walked the streets of the city center of Chambéry for a week.
This renovation helps to raise public awareness of the risk of flooding and to highlight little-known moments in the history of our city.
To repaint the flood markers, the Radiani company could not choose just any color! So that the plates are consistent with the historical heritage of the city, the colors used – black and white – were defined and validated by the architect of the Buildings of France.

These markers were installed following the biggest flood the city had ever known, on January 18, 1875. On that day, the entire plain of Chambéry, from the city center to Lake Bourget, is flooded. The cause: an exceptional warm spell which caused the Leysse and its tributaries, the Hyères and the Albanne, to overflow. Under the influence of unusually warm rain for the season, the snow in the surrounding hills melts and very quickly raises the level of the rivers. In a few hours, the water invaded the city and rose higher and higher until it reached 1.12 meters on rue Bonivard and rue Croix d’Or! The plain around Chambéry then resembled a vast lake and the damage was innumerable.
Since 1875, other floods have taken place but much less destructive than this one. The last big flood of the 20th century dates back to 1990, the city center was not flooded but the plain of Savoie Technolac was heavily affected.
