The 15th Edition of La Zontienne: An Empowering Race for Pink October

As part of the annual Pink October event, the 15th edition of the La Zontienne race will be held on Sunday October 8 at Mas d’Escattes.

The Zonta Club Nîmes Romaines, created in 1989, is at the helm of this event. This brings together women committed to promoting and supporting the autonomy of women and girls. The funds raised by the club are donated to causes that are dear to them such as education, access to culture, equal opportunities, improved health and economic emancipation. Their actions make it possible to finance various projects with young high school students and students, to open culture to all (Museum Action for All), to support actions working against violence against women.

Three courses are offered, a 10-kilometer mixed race, a 5-kilometer women’s race and a 6-kilometer mixed hike. Present at the press conference, Audrey Romero is the president of the “Pour Eux Pour Elles” association and the patron of the La Zontienne race. Affected by breast cancer, the latter created this association to bear witness to these heavy treatments. Next to her, Nadine Houede, professor at Montpellier-Nîmes universities and sponsor of the race. Head of the medical oncology department at Nîmes University Hospital, she spoke of the great progress in the treatment of breast cancer, which affects more than 60,000 new people per year: “We are able to screen half of the women between 50 and 75 years old. Today our interest is to provide personalized medicine and analyze each person in order to detect the type of cancer. This allows us to provide adapted solutions”, she mentions. The cure rate for the disease today is said to be around 80%, a great success.
