On Sunday morning, a 13-year-old boy was killed by falling rocks while boarding the Eisriesenwelt in the Salzburg municipality of Werfen. A corresponding one ORF– A police spokeswoman confirmed the courier.
A second person, a 16-year-old boy, was injured in the accident. There is different information about the severity. The nationality of the victim is still open. The rockfall is said to have passed between two rockfall galleries. The exact background of the accident is not yet known. The Alpine police were still on site on Sunday afternoon for investigations.
The ice cave was closed. Around 100 visitors were brought into the valley by the Alpine police, fire brigade and mountain rescue service. The Eisriesenwelt in the Tennengebirge in the Salzburg district of Pongau is the largest ice cave in the world.
