The 110th Tour de France (UCI World Tour) competed on the 20th stage, the final mountain section of the year, from Belfort to Le Markstein-Ferland, a ski resort in the Vosges Mountains, on July 22nd.
Austrian Felix Gal (AG2R, Citroën Team) was second in the section, and Danish Joonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma) in Maillot Jaune was third.
There is only one stage left in this year’s tour. On the 23rd, Vinguego will make a triumphant return to Paris, the capital of France, wearing the Maillot Jaune for the second year in a row.
Ciccone wins mountain prize
151 competitors entered the 20th stage. Viktor Campenaerts and Jasper Debuist (Lot Destiny) were the first to attack. Kampenaerts continued to escape the first Baron d’Alsace (Category 2) alone, but he was caught with 4.4km to the summit.
Giulio Ciccone (Riddle Trek) in Maillot Apova started the stage just six points behind second-placed Galle in the mountains. He joined the escape and led the way through three category 2 passes and one category 3 pass, securing the mountain award.
Local Pinot Attacks
The other star of the day was local Frenchman Thibaut Pinault (Groupama FDJ). He escaped from the pack with two teammates on the 56.5km descent of the Croix des Moynas and joined the lead pack. He attacked at the end of the Category 1 Petit Palon Pass and passed the summit alone to great cheers.
With 4.5km to go until the final Platzerwasel summit, Pinault was caught up by Thomas Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Warren Barguil (Team Arkea Samsic) to lose the chance to win the stage, but was awarded the day’s Fighting Spirit award.
In the maillot jaune group, the maillot blanc Pogacar attacked at the Platzerwasel pass, followed by the maillot jaune Vingegaard and Gal. They quickly caught up with the first three, leaving the top six with four kilometers to the summit. However, only Maillot Jaune and Maillot Blanc could keep up with Gal’s acceleration.
At the back, Simon Yates (Team Jaiko AlUllah) attacked first, with his twin brother Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) joining later, and the two of them chased the lead group. The Yates brothers were 12 seconds behind when Gal led the top of the mountain, eight kilometers from the finish line.
The Yates brothers caught up to the three with 5km to go, leaving them in the lead. Adam Yates continued to lead, and Pogacar seemed to pay off in the end by sprinting Maillot Jaune’s Vingegao.
David Godu (Groupama FDJ) from France, who was 10th overall until the day before, fell behind the main group after carelessly falling on the downward curve of the Petit Baron Pass. He was more than five minutes behind on this stage and looked like he was out of the top 10 overall.
However, Sepp Kuos (Jumbo-Visma), who crashed with Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiaz) on the downhill slope of the Baron d’Alsace pass in the early stages, finished more than 20 minutes late, dropping from 9th place overall.
■ Comments from Pogacar, who won his 11th win in the section
“Today I finally felt like myself again. I felt really good from start to finish. After many days of suffering, I felt good again and it was great to win the segment.
Waiting for Adam Yates to come back. Because he knew him and knew he could lead extremely well. He made the end less nerve-wracking and a little easier to win. I’m very happy that the team has done such a great job again.”
