No winner in the 109th Leipzig derby between chemistry and locomotive
Dhe 109th Leipzig City Derby has no winner. Chemie Leipzig parted without a goal from local rivals Lok Leipzig on Sunday in the Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark. This leaves the Leutzscher coached by Miroslav Jagatic, who overtook Lok last Monday with the 2-1 win at the Berlin AK, as sixth in the table with two points ahead of the team coached by Almedin Civa. It was quiet in and around the stadium until the final whistle.
The two teams have already met twice this season, with 1. FC Lok winning both the state cup and the first leg. Leutzscher’s last (home) win against their city rivals came on May 7th last year with a 2-1 win in the regional league.
Chemistry started well in the game, had significantly more game shares and also the better chances. But the exploitation of chances was poor. After the change, Lok pushed more. Mike Eglseder (48′) has the chance to take the lead, but this was prevented by chemistry keeper Benjamin Bellot with a strong foot defence. After a good hour it was an open exchange of blows. Substitute Manassé Eshele then had the winning goal for Chemie on his feet from a tight angle in the 75th minute, but the ball went just wide of the far post. At the other end, Osman Atilgan’s header failed to hit Bellot in the 88th minute.
Since 1909, both clubs have been measuring their strength in competitive games. The Leipzig city derby is now just as traditional with 109 editions as the Hamburg derby between HSV and St. Pauli (108) and the Munich one between TSV 1860 and FC Bayern (164 duels). 1. FC Lok and its predecessor clubs, who have won 54 derbies so far, lead the overall list of competitive games. The chemists, including their predecessors, won 35 times. 20 games ended with a draw on Sunday.
