The 100 Most Powerful Women: From Harris to Wilmès

Forbes has released a list of the 100 most powerful women in the world for the tenth time. The list includes established names such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel on one, as well as women who emerged as world leaders or corona experts in 2020.

It’s no surprise that Kamala Harris is in the list of 2020 shoots upwards. The newly elected Vice President of the United States has to put up with only Angela Merkel and Christine Lagarde, head of the European Central Bank, in the colorful list of CEOs, CFOs, scientists, heads of state and government, queens, actresses and singers.

Our ex-Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès also appears in the list, at number 71, a long way from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, but ahead of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Forbes briefly mentions that Wilmès became Belgium’s first female prime minister in 2019, but does not mention her new position as foreign ministers in the De Croo government. Wilmès was ranked 68 for the first time last year.

It is striking that those who played an important role in the corona pandemic come high in the ranking, such as Jacinda Ardern (32th place) who successfully and quickly managed to contain two waves in New Zealand. Another woman, current vice president and future CEO of CVS Health pharma company Karen Lynch, is ranked 38. She was responsible for the rapid rollout of a corona testing program last year and will lead a vaccine program next year.
