The 10 best scenes from The Lord of the Rings

It was said that it was not possible to make these books into films. But not only did Peter Jackson and his production team succeed in achieving the impossible, but they also gave us an absolutely amazing film. Choosing and ranking the top 10 moments is a very difficult task, but here are the ones we think are the best…

10. The Ring Goes South – (The Fellowship of the Ring)

8. Gollum and Smeagol – (The Two Towers)

Andy Serkis’ performance as Gollum cannot be praised enough. His scenes as Gollum and Smeagol talking to each other are some of his best performances, made even more special if you check out the behind-the-scenes footage available. There you can see how faithfully his performance was transferred to digital creatures. Furthermore, this is one of those scenes that deepens the character in a surprising way. There’s some pretty cool stuff in this iconic image, as all our heroes prepare themselves for the coming wave of ugly bad guys, including cave trolls. We then see the whole brotherhood fighting together and every battle is heavy. When the battle begins, the music stops completely and we get a much closer sense of the battle than we get later. Sure, there are fights in confined spaces later in the trilogy, but not all characters like it together. I also thought the scene was intimate and well directed without feeling overdone. Of course, there are some details here, but we didn’t have Legolas skateboarding on a wing or a tree trunk. Of course, it jumped on the trolls’ heads, but it wasn’t that amazing by any means.

6. Gray Haven – (Return of the King)

It might not have been easy for Peter Jackson to tie the entire trilogy together. Many criticized the final scenes of the film for feeling a bit like endings stacked on top of each other, but at the same time, some important things were being addressed. When it was time to say goodbye, whether to Gandalf or to Frodo, he too went to the Badlands. The scene with the ship sailing into the light might have been a perfect ending, but I also understand that they wanted to end more faithfully with the line Sam’s last. Regardless, it’s a very beautiful scene, full of brilliant scenery that will bring tears to your eyes every time.

5. The Council of Elrond – (The Fellowship of the Ring)

When Elrond announced the formation of the Fellowship, it is naturally at the heart of the film for two reasons; one is obvious, it’s when the whole gang “really” starts the adventure, and the other if you watch the extended version on. the DVD, this is where you change discs. For me, these films have been the subject of several marathons, and it’s almost a form of meditation to take a natural break here, stretch my legs, and prepare myself for what’s to come. But more than that, it’s a classic look in many ways. Hugo Weaving’s performance has been the most influential of all time, but of course we have “Not just one…” And great performances from everyone involved.

4. Shire- (Circle Fellowship)

Although we haven’t spent much time in the Shire, it is definitely one of our favorite places. The production design here is perhaps the best in the entire trilogy, and although we do get a glimpse of the green hills early in the film, it’s only when the Gray Wizard arrives that things start to get serious and the Shire can appear properly. Frodo is sitting under a tree and Gandalf is singing a song, the famous scene: ” A wizard is never late…” It’s as good as it gets, and I want to point out two things in particular. One of them is, of course, the music of Howard Shore. The track, titled “Bag End,” is very comforting, and while the music throughout the trilogy is great and appropriate for its setting, I don’t know if any piece fits more better than what we see here. The second is Ian McKellen. I think, in many ways, he is the only actor in any role who gave 100% completely to the role. However, this is an entirely different discussion, and let’s just say that Gandalf’s arrival is one of the best things the film has to offer in the Shire.

3. Khazad-dûm 橋 – （Fellowship of the Circle）

Aside from possibly having the most quoted lines of the series in this scene, there is a lot that is great about this scene. First, the full manifestation of the Balrog is a very powerful moment in black darkness. Then there is a flying shot of the Alliance running over the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, and then the Balrog against the Gray Wizard. It is ready for bombastic music, which ends suddenly when Gandalf enters the darkness, and the whole thing turns melancholic, followed by a tonal melody. There is also an interesting curiosity here, that particular line “You Can’t Pass” It does not appear in the books, but Gandalf says The first line of “You Can’t Pass” Repeat many times. But it’s a nice little change that really works.

2. Crossroads of the Fallen King – (Fellowship of the Circle)

Just like many times when it comes to movies, it’s the emotional lines and scenes that affect me the most. When Frodo is left alone, his faithful friend Sam runs after him and sinks like a stone in water. When he is rescued and they are all in the boat, Sean Astin’s performance is brilliant and you will believe him when he says this line: ” I made a promise, Mr. Frodo, a promise. Don’t leave him, Samwise Gamgee. I’m not saying that, and I’m not saying that. This is Sam and Frodo together, and nowhere in all time does their mutual friendship shine brighter than it does now. There is still a long way to go. They are still far from Mordor, but they have been through so much. And Frodo will need Sam in ways he doesn’t know yet. So, lucky to have him by your side. Because we all know Sam is the real hero of this story.

1. Oath of Elendil – (Return of the King)

I usually judge which look is the best based on a very simple criterion. That is, the most clips I have seen on YouTube. The scene where Aragorn gets the crown and becomes king is good for several reasons. The kiss that ends all the terrible things that happened, when he sees Arwen again, and all our characters together. But it’s the ending that makes it the best scene in the entire trilogy. When Aragorn, and Arwen with him, stood before the four knights who bowed their heads in reverence, he said Out came the words: “My friends…you bow to no one”the music we know now seemed to erupt. It is a scene of great proportions and beauty, a tearjerker, my favorite scene in three of the world’s best movies.
