The 016 service on WhatsApp receives 680 inquiries about sexist violence in less than a month

After its first twenty days of operation, the new WhatsApp service, linked to 016 for the care of victims of gender violence, has received 680 inquiries. Of this total, 83% correspond specifically to cases of gender violence and 16.8% to other types of violence.

Victoria Rosell, Government delegate against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosell, made an assessment yesterday of the service that was launched on March 10.

More than 1,557 inquiries

The WhatsApp number exclusively enabled for the fight against gender violence corresponds to the 600 000 016. Since its inception in March, has registered 1,557 consultations, of which 877 were not relevant and 680 were.

Victoria Rosell has linked this increase to the broadcast of the documentary of Rocío Carrasco’s testimony in prime time television, since calls have experienced an increase of 61%, while online inquiries have grown by 281%: “Whenever there is a program, a campaign, a case of media projection that comes to light, many other women self-identify their own violence. “

The delegate wanted to recall the data from the 2019 Macro-survey on Violence against Women, which indicated that Almost 80% of this type of crime is not reported to the Police and courts. This figure grows to almost 90% when it comes to cases of sexual violence: “It is necessary to value the people who help to make gender violence visible because it is proven that verbalizing it, asking for help, is the first step to get out of the violence”.

Creation of comprehensive care centers

Victoria Rosell confirmed during yesterday’s meeting the agreement for the creation of 24-hour comprehensive care centers for victims of sexual violence, which will be raised to the Sectorial Equality Conference on April 19. This agreement has raised multiple ideological differences between the autonomous governments, but Rosell has indicated that “everyone will want to participate in this comprehensive and specialized protection against sexual violence and in favor of victims “.

Similarly, women in an irregular administrative situation will be able to access these centers. This means that, finally, Spain can rise to the level of the Istanbul Convention, beginning to bridge the gap between comprehensive protection against intimate partner violence and other forms of violence such as sexual violence.

Rosell also had during his appearance a few words about the alleged case of multiple rape of a woman in Sabadell, underlining the importance of focusing on certain institutional attitudes. The delegate has stated, in relation to the same case, how little unnecessary it is to ask the victim if she is sure of what she says: “There is a State that must also institutionally say to the victims: I do believe you. This does not violate any type of presumption of innocence, neither the prosecutor saying it before there is a sentence, nor the society saying to the victims ‘I do believe you’, because historically, even legally, women have been given less credibility than to the men”.
