Lucas’ control over “Star Wars”

Although Lucas only directed the first Star Wars film himself, leaving others to direct The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, he remained the creative mind behind the entire trilogy. In the prequels, Lucas took over the direction again, which led to controversial discussions. Spielberg said in 2012that he would have liked to make a “Star Wars” film, but Lucas refused to allow him to do so. For Lucas, Star Wars was his personal project that he wasn’t willing to share. Spielberg himself respected this decision and understood that Lucas was treating the franchise like his own child.

What if Spielberg had made Star Wars?

The idea that Spielberg could have made a Star Wars film captures the imagination of many fans. Together, Lucas and Spielberg proved with “Raiders of the Lost Ark” how successful their collaboration can be. In fact, Spielberg was at least indirectly involved in “Revenge of the Sith” – taking part in some action scenes such as the “Order 66” montage, which is considered one of the most emotionally powerful scenes of the prequels.
